For this, you are going to need a program called iReb created by iH8sn0w. Click to Download: HERE

Step 1: First things first is that you are going to need to put your device in DFU mode. Here is how to do this.

Step 2: Once iTunes has detected that your device is in DFU mode, close iTunes down and open up the iReb program. You will be greated with this menu:

Step 3: Click on the device that you have and wait. You’re devices screen should either turn red or white.

Step 4: You will now be able to SHIFT+RESTORE to your custom firmware of your choice without the errors.

Step One
Make a folder called “Pwnage” on the desktop. In it, you will need a couple of things. PwnageTool 3.1.5, found here or here

You will also need the 3.1.3 iPhone firmware.
3.1.3 (3GS): iPhone2,1_3.1.3_7E18_Restore.ipsw

When downloading the IPSW file, it is best to download it with Firefox since Safari often auto extracts it!

Step Two
Double click to mount PwnageTool 3.1.5 then drag the PwnageTool icon into the Pwnage folder.

Then from the Pwnage folder double click to launch the PwnageTool application.

Click Ok if presented with a warning.

Step Three
Click to select Expert Mode from the top menu bar

Step Four
Click to select your iPhone. A check-mark will appear over the image of the phone.

Step Five
Click the blue arrow button to continue. You will be brought to the “Browse for IPSW” page. On my laptop, it automatically found the IPSW. If PwnageTool doesn’t automatically find the ipsw file you can click Browse for IPSW….

Click to select the found IPSW file, a checkmark will appear next to it. Then click the blue arrow button to continue.

Step Six
You will then be brought to a menu with 7 choices. Click to select General then click the blue arrow button.

The General settings allows you to decide the partition size. Check Activate the phone if you are not with an official carrier then click the blue arrow button.

NOTE*: Deselect Activate if you have an iPhone legitimately activated on an official carrier.
NOTE*: You may need to increase the size of the root partition slightly. My first attempt failed at creating the IPSW until I increased the size to about 695 MB.

The Bootneuter settings are greyed out for the 3G iPhone. Click the blue arrow button.

The Cydia settings menu allows you to create custom packages so you do not have to manually install the necessary them later.

Click to select the Download packages tab. Then click the Refresh button to display all the available packages. Double clicking the package you want will download it and make it available in the Select Packages tab.

Checkmark the ones you want then Click the blue arrow button.

The Custom Packages Settings menu displays listed package settings for your custom IPSW. For know leave these settings as is. Click the blue arrow button to continue.

The Custom Logos Settings menu allows you to add your own images as boot logos. Click the Browse button to select your Boot logo and Recovery logo. If you would like to use the iClarified ones they can be found here: Boot Logo, Recovery Logo

Remember the rules for them: RGB or Grayscale format with Alpha channel and dimensions below 320×480…

Click the blue arrow button to continue.

Step Seven
You are now ready to begin the pwnage process! Click the Build button to select it then click the Blue arrow button to begin.

Step Eight
You will be asked to save your custom .ipsw file. Save it to your Pwnage folder you created on your Desktop.

Your IPSW is now being built. Please allow up to 10 minutes.

You will be asked to enter your administrator password. Do this then click the OK button.

You will be asked if your iPhone has been pwned before. If unsure click the NO button.

Step Nine
If your iPhone isn’t already connected to the computer connect it now.

After delivering the payload PwnageTool will have placed your iPhone in recovery mode. Click OK to close the popup message telling you this.

iTunes will also pop-up saying it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.

Step Ten
In iTunes, hold the Alt/Option key and click Restore.

Step Eleven
Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop using the dialog window that appears. Select the custom IPSW that was created (iPhone2,1_3.1.3_7E18_Custom_Restore.ipsw) and click the Open button.

Step Twelve
iTunes will now restore the firmware on your iPhone. This can also take up to 10 minutes. Once done you will be rebooted into jailbroken iPhone OS 3.1.3!

Perhaps due to concern over the release of Sn0wybreeze which has caused some users to have trouble when jailbreak their devices, they have gone ahead and released a new version of their PwnageTool application allowing users to create custom IPSW files on Macs.

If you own an iPhone 3GS it is recommended that you do not update but simply stay on OS 3.1.2. There is no real difference between the two firmwares and there is no point in upgrading and risking loosing your jailbreak/unlock. You should really only update (for now) if you know you have your SHSH saved with Cydia.

On Tuesday, Apple released firmware 3.1.3 for the iPhone and iPod touches.  Unless you’ve personally observed a problem with the reporting of your battery percentage, there’s no reason to update to 3.1.3.  We know some of you will want to anyway.  Superbowl Sunday’s PwnageTool 3.1.5 for Mac OS X will let you do so safely, preserving your jailbreak and ultrasn0w unlock.  (If you use the blacksn0w unlock (at baseband 05.11.07), you need to stay at 3.1.2.)

iPhone 3G and 3GS unlockers should always be very wary to update their firmware.  This is no exception.  If you make a mistake along the way you may find yourself updating to official 3.1.3 in which case you will lose your unlock, possibly forever.

iPhone 3GS users (regardless of unlock) should stay away from this and all 3.1.3 jailbreak tools unless you know you have your “SHSH hashes” backed up via Cydia.  That’s because if you make a mistake you may find yourself stuck at official 3.1.3 with no way to jailbreak or come back down to 3.1.2 to jailbreak.

If you really truly feel that you need to update, this version creates a custom 3.1.3 IPSW for you to restore to on your iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS with early bootrom, iPod touch 1G, and iPod touch 2G with early bootrom.  If you don’t know if you have an early bootrom or not, please avoid updating until you learn more.

You don’t need to be pre-jailbroken on anything but the iPod touch 2G early bootrom.  And really for that device, it’s faster and easier to use redsn0w 0.9.4 as mentioned in our last post.  For that matter, if you have an ipt1g, iphone2g, or iphone3g(and don’t need an unlock), you should use redsn0w too (but version 0.9.3).  It’s faster and you won’t have to go through a full restore process (just do an update then run redsn0w, pointing it at 3.1.2 FW instead of 3.1.3).

If you have an iPhone 3GS, PwnageTool works if you’re currently at version 3.1.2 or below (down to 3.0).  You don’t need to be already jailbroken — PwnageTool will ask you if you’re jailbroken after you’ve created the IPSW.  Don’t use PwnageTool on the iPhone 3GS if you’re at 3.1.3, it just won’t work.  Downgrade to 3.1.2 using the methods described here.  If you can’t downgrade because you don’t have your 3GS 3.1.2 hashes on file with Cydia, you’ll need to sit out the 3.1.3 jailbreak.

We aren’t revealing any new exploits to Apple with this jailbreak. Everything here has been used before, it’s just a straightforward port of Pwnage2 and 24Kpwn to the new firmware.  It’s possible the new firmware was released largely to flush out new exploits before the next big release.  We won’t be biting.

We’d really like the above warnings and disclaimers to sink in. Please don’t download the files below and use them blindly.

In a previous Twitter, he announces that he found the original source for the Redsn0w and therefore will be able to finally port Redsn0w to work on OS 3.1.2. This does NOT mean they are releasing non-tethered jailbreaks for the iPod Touch 3rd generation and iPhone 3GS with the new bootroms.

Here is all the information on the new PwnageTool MAKE SURE YOU READ ALL OF IT!

Here are some details on our latest version of PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X which supports the 3.1.2 release of the iPhone software for iPhone 2G/3G/3GS and iPod Touch 1G/2G.

If you’re already jailbroken (by whatever means), you don’t need to mess around with DFU mode at all.  Just create (or get from a friend) your custom IPSW and Option-Restore (Shift-Restore on Windows) to it via iTunes.  Don’t enter DFU mode at all.  Please make sure you are restoring to the custom IPSW, not the stock one from Apple!  For best results, use the latest iTunes (9.0.1) — which includes a nice new application organizer.

This release allows your baseband to remain unlocked at 3.1.2, but it does not unlock a new baseband put there by restoring to official 3.1.x.  It is super important that people who need the unlock to understand they can keep it only by starting at 3.0 (or earlier) and updating solely to custom IPSWs that don’t update the baseband.  For those who have been onboard the “unlock train”, simply install ultrasn0w via Cydia once you’ve restored to your custom IPSW.  Don’t forget to turn off the “3G” setting in Settings->General->Network if you use T-Mobile in the U.S.A.

Note for 3GS users not already jailbroken and stuck at 3.1.x: this version of PwnageTool has a side feature to jailbreak your 3GS.  It uses a simple implementation of the usb control msg hole found by chronicdev, geohot, and our very own gray.  Now that the hole is public and in use, we expect Apple to close it by the next major firmware update. That’s why 3GS users need to get their ECID hashes for 3.1.x now, and need to stay onboard the “jailbreak train” in all future updates.  For more details on what this means, please see our earlier posts or ask in our comments section (moderated by the always helpful @angie and @confucious!).

For the early adopters who ran blackra1n and are having problems with mobilesubstrate, winterboard, diskaid, or ifunbox, you can install a custom .ipsw from PwnageTool to fix these issues.  That’s because all jailbroken devices accept a custom .ipsw created by PwnageTool.  (However, if you ran blackra1n on a 3G or 3GS that means you updated to stock 3.1.x, and the carrier unlock is now out of reach.  We’ll continue to work on a carrier unlock for the latest basebands, but the timeframe for such an unlock is unknowable.)

Note: If you use internet tethering on a carrier that doesn’t officially support it, you’ll lose it by going to 3.1.x.  Stay back at 3.0 until a hack for that is developed.

SUMMARY:

• The iPhone 3GS is now supported out of the box in PwnageTool 3.1.4 (or if you have upgraded to 3.1.x in iTunes)
• The iPod 2G is still supported in PwnageTool 3.1.4 but you must already be jailbroken (we’ll update this if there’s a big demand from non-jailbroken ipt2G owners)
• The iPod touch 3G is NOT supported

DETAILS:

1. GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G(S) with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service then you should only update your device with an .ipsw that is made with the new PwnageTool. There are no second chances with this. You need to remember that PwnageTool will provide an upgrade path to newer versions of the iPhone software in the future.
2. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
3. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
4. At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.1.4 capable version of PwnageTool.
5. PwnageTool will work for the iPhone 3GS
6. PwnageTool will work for the iPod touch 2G
7. PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G(S) and the iPod touch (1st Generation and 2nd Generation) but NOT the iPod touch 3rd generation.
8. For 3G and 3G(S) users who are Pwned, PwnageTool is your key to updating in the future, just remember to never install an update directly from Apple, always use an .ipsw that has been created with PwnageTool.
9. There is no Windows version of PwnageTool it is a Mac OS X tool only, we are not developing a Windows version of PwnageTool.

What’s a Baseband?

The ‘baseband’ is the generic nickname given to the internal components of the iPhone that handle the phone calls and Internet access. This ‘baseband’ is a tiny and unique independent computer system that runs inside your iPhone, it is separate to the main system that handles the applications (such as email and google maps) and it talks to the main part of the phone over an internal communications network.

Think of it like a cable modem or other peripheral that is attached to your home PC that needs occasional updates. When a software update is released and presented to you within iTunes the baseband is sometimes updated (to fix bugs or add new features).

The 3.1.2 update for the iPhone 3G and 3GS contains such an update, so running the vanilla updater straight away with iTunes will reprogram and update the baseband.

WHICH DEVICE DO I HAVE?

Read the description to identify your device, once you have correctly identified your device follow the specific instructions for that device as listed below.

SIM Free/SP Unlocked/Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G(S)

This applies if you bought your iPhone 3G(S) for $$$$$$$. This model of iPhone 3G(S) doesn’t have an Service Provider lock (aka factory unlocked) and you are able to put any SIM card into the phone and get service. Your phone is already unlocked so you do not need to worry about baseband updates, you can use PwnageTool to create an ipsw and then use this to update and jailbreak your phone.

SIM Free/SP Unlocked/Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G

This applies if you bought your iPhone 3G for $$$$$$$. This model of iPhone 3G doesn’t have an Service Provider lock (aka factory unlocked) and you are able to put any SIM card into the phone and get service. Use PwnageTool to create a firmware image and restore with that .ipsw using iTunes.

iPod Touch 2G

Use PwnageTool to create a firmware image and restore with that .ipsw to your already jailbroken device using iTunes.

iPod Touch 3G

At this time PwnageTool does not support this device.

Notes:

So far, there has only been bundles for the iPhone 2G and 3G, support of the iPhone 3GS is coming soon. Also, these bundles are not ‘official’ as they were not released by the Dev Team. However they have worked for people regardless. So if you don’t mind, check the guide below.

If you want to jailbreak your iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS or any of the iPod Touch’s on Windows you can use the new jailbreaking tool called Blackra1n.

Guide:

• 1. Download the two files above.
  2. Right-click the Mouse on PwnageTool and click on ‘Show Package Contents’.
  3. Click on Contents, then resources and then FirmwareBundles.
  4. Move the two new bundles you downloaded into this folder.
  5. Open up the PwnageTool and use it as normal!

This guide is aim for people who don’t have a mac who therefor cannot use the Blackra1n program.

New WinPwn here we come!

The Sn0wybreeze program will therefore allow you to make custom IPSW files on Windows.

Rumor has it that the program will NOT be compatible with the iPhone 3GS but will be for the iPod Touch 2nd generation.

There estimated time of release is October 12. Beta testers will be needed once they have madea stable built.

The DevTeam have finally managed to crack the 3.1 jailbreak on the iPhone 3GS and the iPod Touch 2nd Generation! The jailbreak is using the PwnageTool tool created by the Dev Team.

I’m afraid the jailbreak is yet again only for Macs. However, for Windows users I shall try and find some custom IPSW so you can install it straight away.

Also, for the jailbreak to work, you need to have pwned (with Pwnage Tool or Redsn0w) your iPhone, iPod Touch on 3.0 or 3.0.1 before hand.

The iPhone 3GS is now supported in PwnageTool 3.1.3, assuming the phone was pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 – PwnageTool does not support the 3GS out of the box. If your iPhone 3GS has 3.1 preinstalled and is not Pwned then there is no tested jailbreak solution at the moment.

The iPod 2G is now supported in PwnageTool 3.1.3, assuming the iPod 2G was pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 – PwnageTool does not support the iPod 2G with 3.1 software out of the box.

If you are currently on 3.1 with your iPhone and have not saved your SHSH using Cydia, you will not be able to jailbreak using this tool.

Here is a guide taken from DigitalMarketingTalk on how to do this jailbreak. The guide is done using an iPhone 3GS on a Mac. However it is the same principle for the other devices.

1) Create a folder named Pwnage on your desktop. In that folder download the following files

i) Pwnage 3.1.3: Download it from here: PwnageTool 3.1.3 (480)
ii) iPhone 3GS 3.1 firmware: Download it from here – Link

(Please use firefox instead of safari if not it will be downloaded as a zip file)

2) Mount PwnageTool 3.1 by double clicking PwnageTool_3.1.dmg and drag the PwnageTool icon that opens up, into the Pwnage folder.Then from the Pwnage folder double-click PwnageTool application.

3) Select “Expert Mode” from the top menu bar.

4) Select your iPhone (In this case iPhone 3GS) and click the blue button to continue.

5) Now browse for the IPSW file. Remember you downloaded it in Pwnage folder. (In some cases it may automatically be found).
Click on the IPSW file, if you do it right, a green check mark will appear next to it. Now click the blue button to continue.

6) On the following screen you will see 7 different options.

Inside General settings DO NOT CHECK ‘Activate the phone’ option. Repeat: Since you are using an iPhone 3GS, irrespective of whether you are on an official carrier or not, you always need to make sure that the option is UNCHECKED.
Increase the size of the root partition slightly. To about 695 MB. Then click blue button.

Skip the Bootneuter settings by just clicking the blue button.

You will then be taken to Cydia settings where you can create custom packages so you don’t have to manually install them later.

Select the Download packages tab. Then click the Refresh button to display all the available packages. Double click the package that you want to download in order to make it available in the Select Packages list.

In the Select Packages tab, check the packages you want and click the blue arrow button.

On the following Custom Packages Settings screen. Leave all the settings as it is and click the blue arrow button.

You will then reach the boot logo settings. Just skip this step and click the blue button.

7) On the following screen click the “build” button to start the pwnage process (i.e build your own IPSW file).

8 ) Save the custom firmware(IPSW file) in Pwnage folder on the desktop (which you created in step 1) and wait for about 15 mins for it to be built.

9) Enter your administrator password.

10) Whether or not your iPhone has been pwned before just select NO on the next screen.

11) Keep your iPhone connected to your mac and switch it off, when indicated.

12) Now the part where you have to pay rapt attention and follow directions to enter DFU mode.

i) Hold the home and power buttons for 10 seconds.

ii)Release the power button and hold the home button for 10 seconds.

On doing this you will get a notification that reads successfully entered DFU (recovery) mode.

13) In iTunes, hold the Alt/Option key and click restore simultaneously. A new window will open where you can select the CUSTOM firmware that you built in step 7.

14) Browse to the Pwnage folder on your desktop.Select iPhone2,1_3.1_7C144_Custom_Restore.ipsw file and click the choose button. (REMEMBER: you have to choose CUSTOM IPSW in this step)

15) iTunes will then restore your iPhone 3GS using the custom firmware in about 15 minutes.

16) You will then get the option of setting up your iPhone either as a new phone or restoring from backup.

17) Now just restart your iPhone and you will find cydia on your springboard.
