PSX4iPhone, the Playstation 1 emulator for the iPhone and iPod Touch, has been updated by Zodttd the creator for firmware OS 3.1.2. However he states the speed-wise there is not too much difference and for the emulator to really ’shine’, you need an iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch 3rd Generation.

The emulator can be downloaded through Cydia on the Zodttd & Macciti source that should already be on your device.

This has been a long time coming, but my schedule is just now starting to free up. I have updated psx4iphone to also support the 3.1.x series of firmwares. Included in psx4iphone v1.1.0 is a fix for a bug causing the non-scaled landscape screen to display properly.

Don’t expect too much difference in performance. This emulator will still require an iPhone 3gs or iPod Touch 3rd Gen to really shine. I will be working more on this emulator as I get more free time.

You can download psx4iphone from the ZodTTD Repo which is built-in to Cydia via the included community sources package. This means it is also available via RockApp, Icy, etc. Brief installation instructions are provided within the package info.

If you run into any issues with psx4iphone v1.1.0 feel free to ask for support via the comments. Just remember, don’t ask for ROMs/ISOs or where to get the BIOS.

I have always had the Rock.app program on my iPhone as I am a big users of RockYourPhone’s Intelliscreen application but up until now, I haven’t really had a good look at it.

But after using it for a day, checking out all the different features, I’m starting to think that maybe Rock is actually better than Cydia. Here’s why.

We all hate the fact that Cydia keeps ‘Reloading Data’. It takes forever and is always doing. It’s a huge hasle and time waster. Rock on the other hand does not have this problem at all. Rock is smooth, fast and has many more features than Cydia does.

The great thing about Rock is that it uses the same sources as Cydia ie any sources added through Cydia will also be added onto the Rock app. This means you can get all the same apps, plus more, with Rock. What I mean by ‘plus more’ is that you can also access all the apps created by the RockYourPhone team (the team that created the Rock app) such as Intelliscreen and MyWii.

However my favorite feature is reviews and ratings. Users can write a short review (much like in the AppStore) about every app and can also add a 5-star rating if they wish. Because of these reviews, it then has a Most Popular and Highest rated pages as well which is helpful as well.

But Remember….

…these are not the only two apps available for you to use. There is also Kryptes and Icy. Iptolage123 from iPodTouchFans has put together some pros and cons of all the different ones that are available:

Cydia-
Pros-
-More Stable than the other two
-Works better with the apt sources
Cons-
-Slower than others
-Constantly reloading data
-One bad source and you have to restore
-Doesn’t have a good back up sytem

Icy-
Pros-
-Alot cleaner and faster than Cydia but nowhere near Rock
Cons-
-Can’t have Icy at the same time as Cydia
-Not stable at all

Rock-
Pros-
-Quicker
-The Back-up system
-Mutiple downloads at once
-The option to soft reset at exit not after you install the package
-As many packages as cydia uses same sources
-Cool UI

Cons-
-Less Stable than Cydia
-Backup has put multiple idevices in ifinte loop
-Can’t install SOME paid 3rd party apps
-Reportably installs bogus adware
-Alot of the time it is hard to add a repo

Kryptes
Pros-
Alrite UI
-Don’t HAVE to actually install it (but you can)

Cons-
-Not many stuff yet
-Mainly ringotnes mixed in with themes

All I’m saying is that you should go out and see what else is available. Most people will never have used anything but Cydia and I would strongly recommend to try out Rock (and the others) and see if you like it better (I do). So, what do you use?

Sorin Ionescu is an iPhone users who hates jailbreaking. He doesn’t like Cydia as he finds it buggy, ugly and promotes jailbroken apps which he believes tend to mess up your device and cause the need to restore. And yet, he needs to unlock his device.

So, he has come up with the solution. Creamsn0w is an iPhone unlockers except it does it without install Cydia, Icy or any of the unneccasry files that other jailbreaking tools install on your device.

Cydia and Icy will not be installed. No visible modifications can be seen. The iPhone will behave like an official unlocked phone even though it is not. It is safe to take it into the Apple store. Their employees will not be able to detect that it is jailbroken and unlocked from just looking at it. Just do not let them restore it. You will not lose your warranty. I thank the iPhone Dev Team for creating PwnageTool and ultrasn0w. I also thank Saurik for Mobile Substrate.

CreamSn0w will always use the latest Mobile Substrate and ultrasn0w available at the time of release. Unfortunately, it is Mac only; there is currently no Windows solution. But, a firmware created with PwnageTool on Mac can and should be shared.

The below screenshots demonstrate how your device looks after using the Creamsn0w plugin, unchanged.

RiPDev have officially signed their resignation to the jailbreaking community and have closed their doors on all their projects including their more famous ones such as Icy, Caterpillar (from 1.1.X days) and of course Intaller.

RipDev have created both great and bad things in their time with the jailbreaking community.

Things such as Caterpillar which were great and yet, RipDev failed to include the uninstall feature meaning everytime someone uninstalled it, it would results in a SWOD (spinning wheel of death). Regardless, I was a big fan of this program as it allowed me to have 5-icon dock and a calender on the homescreen. I know it’s a given nowadays but in the 1.1.X days, that was something else.

Also, when they took over the Installer program, I believe they didn’t make it as great as it could have been. Cleary, because Cydia is the new ‘Installer’ nowadays.

I bid RipDev a fairwell and good luck for the future!

Here is a copy of their Goodbye post on their website RipDev.org:

It’s been a great two years, but unfortunately, the time has come for Ripdev to close its doors. There are many reasons for this, most of which we probably will never disclose (unless we are forced to). The important thing is that due to circumstances we will likely be unable to support the titles we have created over the years further. They will be perfectly operatable on the firmware versions they were created for, and you will be able to download and use them — but they will no longer be supported and updated (except for i2Reader Pro that is not being developed by us and that will be kept in sync with its App Store version). We will, of course, transfer the licenses to the new devices — just email us. Our Cydia repository will be operational until at least next year, so be assured that the products you liked and paid for will be available for you to (re)install.

It was a honor to be in the iPhone jailbreak community, and we are proud that we have certainly made a ripple or two. Farewell!

BigBoss himself has posted an important warning on his blog telling users who are going to use the Blackra1n tool to jailbreak their devices NOT to installed Icy using it.

Apparently GeoHot has included a buggy version of Icy in the Blackra1n program and it will cause the jailbreaking process to mess and need to be restore and start all over.

Here is the full warning courtosy of BigBoss:

Just a warning about blackra1n. Geohot released blackra1n a couple weeks ago, and it was pretty good. Unfortunately, Geohot has included a very buggy version of Icy which, when installed, will pretty much screw up your whole jailbreak causing you to have to restore.

Shame on Geohot for not fixing this. We have told him numerous times there are issues. Users have messaged him, he has been notified, he just doesnt care. Anyways:

–> Do NOT install Icy in Blackra1n <–

The icy bundle is broken and does not have permissions to install software, but that’s not the worst part. Blackra1n install of Icy breaks cydia and rock your phone since it has a very old version of dpkg. This is the core to all these installers. Since icy is usually installed last, it overwrites dpkg with its own. This causes things like winterboard not working, sbsettings not working. What is really happening is mobile substrate cannot be installed (among other things).
I get about 20 emails a day on various issues that all stem from this one issue. So please spread the word. Do not install Icy in blackra1n.

Note: Icy is not to blame here, but the installation of Icy on blackra1n. Icy bundle in pwnagetool is fine. The problem is Geohot found a very old Icy and did not get it from rip-dev guys.

RipDev have officially announced that they shall discontinue their support and updates of Installer for the iPhone/iPod Touch. This saddens me because Installer was essentially the birthplace of jailbreaking. When ever someone said jailbreak, I thought of Installer. Now we have Cydia which is an equal, if not better, equivilant.

There is also Icy which is also created by the RipDev.

Today, a new iPhone OS, 3.0 has been released. This is obviously a big and long waited for update for all iPhone users. And we believe, it is about time to officially announce that we are discontinuing support of Installer platform for iPhone and iPod touch.Over past 1.5 years when we were involved in the Installer project (first in 3.x versions, then in 4.x), a lot of things has happened and we believe it’s time to unify the installation platform for the iPhone — and clearly, over the past year this is DPKG, thanks to tremendous effort of Jay Freeman and his Cydia. We have also dropped our two cents by providing our own themeable and lightweight DPKG installer tool, named Icy.

So now you have a choice, which tool to use — and no matter what you choose, it will be compatible with each other. We obviously cannot speak for Jay, but we will do our best to make sure two products play nicely together.

The Installer 4 repositories we manage will be running until July 1st, 2009, then they will be discontinued and brought offline. So if you wanted to get something that is only available in the Installer — this is the time to do so.

We would like to take the opportunity and say “thank you” to everyone who has contributed and supported Installer project in any way. You rock.

RiP Dev have released v1.4 of their Cydia competitor Icy. For those who don’t know, Icy has taken the place of Installer meaning that RiP Dev have stopped creating updates for Installer and now concentrate their efforts of Icy.What’s new in Icy 1.4?

Improved themeability: now it’s possible to specify font and table colors, backgrounds and category icons for even better theme integration.

New icon by Max Rudberg.

Search: package descriptions are now being searched too (thanks to Andrew Tennenbaum!)

Better parsing of categories (sections) — extra whitespace is now being trimmed off resulting in less duplicate  (mistyped) categories.

Resolved issues with installation of some APT repositories in some circumstances.

Sources can now be reordered. Put more important sources to the bottom of the list.

Some additional fixes and tweaks.

How to Install

Launch Cydia.

Press on Manage at the bottom of the screen.

Press Sources.

Press Edit.

Press Add then type : http://apt.ripdev.com.

Press Add Source.

Then wait for it Cydia to update source.

Press Return To Cydia.

Press Done.

Press on the RipDev source then you’ll find Icy 1.4 in the source.

Press Install then Confirm then after the download press Return To Cydia.

Then press on the Home button you’ll then now see Icy in your Springboard.

We have been contacted by many people to adjust the look of Icy so it fits their theme, instead of pure black and white look. The biggest challenge was to keep the speed (app launch time, overall GUI responsiveness) the same as before while giving the flexibility to the theme makers. I believe we have achieved that perfectly.

So, in order to change the Icy appearance, include the file named IcyThemeDefiniton.plist in the theme bundle. Icy will automatically see it and use the definitions from there.

The following keys are available for the IcyThemeDefinition.plist file:

StatusBarStyle (string): can be either “black”, “white” or “transparent”. Defines the appearance of the status bar style in the application.

NavigationBarTintColor (string): defines the global color for all navigation bars used in the application, unless a specific section overrides it (see below).

TableBackgroundColor (string): defines the global table background color (or pattern), unless a specific section overrides it (see below as well).

TableSeparatorColor (string): defines the global table separator color, unless a specific section overrides it.

TableTextColor (string): defines the global table text color, unless a specific section overrides it.

InstallBackgroundColor (string): defines the install/remove pane background color (or pattern).

PackageInfoBackgroundColor (string): defines the package info background color (or pattern).

How to define a color: a color string may be either a triplet or quad of digits separated by comma, or an image file name. It’s easier to give some examples:

0,0,0: black color — each digit is a floating point number from 0 to 1, inclusive. If fourth digit is given, it is an alpha value.

0.5,0,0: dark red (0.5 red, 0 everything else)

DottyBackground.png: pattern loaded from the image DottyBackground.png in the theme bundle.

(empty): clear (transparent) color.

As you can see, you can easily customize the appearance of Icy by defining the keys above. If any key is not found, a default value is used. Now to make things even more flexible, you can define the colors for each section of the application. If any section-specific key is found, it will override the global one for that particular section:

NavigationBarTintColor_Packages, NavigationBarTintColor_Sources, NavigationBarTintColor_Search, NavigationBarTintColor_Installed

TableBackgroundColor_Packages, TableBackgroundColor_Sources, TableBackgroundColor_Search, TableBackgroundColor_Installed

TableSeparatorColor_Packages, TableSeparatorColor_Sources, TableSeparatorColor_Search, TableSeparatorColor_Installed

TableTextColor_Packages, TableTextColor_Sources, TableTextColor_Search, TableTextColor_Installed

It’s really easy to use Icy and it loads much faster than Cydia plus you can add Cydia sources in it too.

But now, they have release a new direct Cydia competitor called Icy. Icy is free to use, faster than Cydia and easier to use.

Here are some bullet points by moabl which I think sum it up well:
What is great:

Speed

Efficency

Compatible with Cydia

Innovative UI

What is not so great:

Cannot filter packages by its source

No way to find new applications that were updated after a refresh

Adding sources to Icy do not add to Cydia. However adding to Cydia does to Icy

Cannot view theme previews

What it means by compatible with Cydia is that it uses the sources from Cydia for itself. Meaning if you add a source to Cydia, it is also added automatically to Icy.

It is much speedier, has landscape mode and a better search system than Cydia. Part of the reason it is so speedy is because it is almost 1/32 the size of Cydia. Icy is just above 1mb and Cydia is 32mb.

Landscape Mode

Here is how to install it:

From Cydia: Add a new source http://apt.ripdev.com and then install Icy from the Packaging category.

From Installer: Icy is available in the System category of Installer.
