Stuck on ‘Restoring from Backup’? – Here is the Fix!

I have just made the jump from OS 3.0 to OS 3.1.2 on the iPhone 3GS and encountered an error that when I did some research seems to be affecting quite a few users out there. This is the ‘Restoring from Backup’ loop that you suffer when you try and restore a backup of your phone onto your recently restored iPhone.

This is not only relating the the OS 3.0 to OS 3.1.2 jump but can happen to everyone on any firmware but regardless, we have a fix that works on any firmware.

The fix in itself is quite simply but was found by chance by Willius on Apple’s very own support forums.

All it involves is that when you do encounter the dreaded ‘Restoring from Backup’ loop and it isn’t progressing from that for a while, you simply need to unplug your iPhone, close iTunes fully (best done by CTRL+ALT+DELETE and stopping iTunes.exe’s process) and then pluging in your device once again.

The ‘Restore in Progress’ screen should appear on your device and after some minutes of this, all your backuped data will be back on your device.

SpringBack – Backup & Restore your Homescreen’s Layout

A new utility for the iPhone/iPod Touch called SpringBack has been released which allows you to backup and restore your entire homesceen’s layout. This could be very useful say you used to have an iNav theme and have the layout setup perfectly, you then change them but want to go back to the iNav theme, it will automatically set everything where it should be to work with the iNav theme.

SpringBack is an easy to use application that backs up your entire Home Screen Layout with the touch of a button and then lets you restore by simply tapping a backup. It also be used to easily layout iNav Themes by just getting your hands on a persons backup and restoring to it. This means no more having to arrange blank webclips and categories! SpringBack is available to download from Cydia from BigBoss’ repo

WARNING: Restoring to a backup that includes an application you no longer have, can slow down your iPod or iPhone. However if for some reason you do restore to a bad backup, SpringBack will automatically backup your current state so you will always have a working backup available

BackToUp – An iPhone Backup Alternative

iBlogGeek has came up with an alternative for the quite frankly put, crappy iPhone/iPod Touch backup system. It is called BackToUp and offers the user the possibility of backing up his SMS, contacts, bookmarks and much more.

This tool is independant from iTunes meanig you don’t need iTunes to run it. Also, at the moment there is only a Mac version.
