I have just made the jump from OS 3.0 to OS 3.1.2 on the iPhone 3GS and encountered an error that when I did some research seems to be affecting quite a few users out there. This is the ‘Restoring from Backup’ loop that you suffer when you try and restore a backup of your phone onto your recently restored iPhone.

This is not only relating the the OS 3.0 to OS 3.1.2 jump but can happen to everyone on any firmware but regardless, we have a fix that works on any firmware.

The fix in itself is quite simply but was found by chance by Willius on Apple’s very own support forums.

All it involves is that when you do encounter the dreaded ‘Restoring from Backup’ loop and it isn’t progressing from that for a while, you simply need to unplug your iPhone, close iTunes fully (best done by CTRL+ALT+DELETE and stopping iTunes.exe’s process) and then pluging in your device once again.

The ‘Restore in Progress’ screen should appear on your device and after some minutes of this, all your backuped data will be back on your device.

If any of your guys are like me who haven’t updated to OS 3.1 but still want to play games and apps from the AppStore which require the latest firmware this guide concerns you. This guide shows you how to fake your firmware to being higher than it actually is to ensure you can play the latest games.

There are two different methods to doing this.

Method 1:

Go to Cydia and download an app called FWChanger

Change you firmware to one of the following:
3.1 iPhone build is 7C144 and the iPod touch is 3.1.1 7C145

Method 2:

This method invovles editing files within the iPhone/iPod Touch’s filesystems. You should only choose this guide if you can’t be botherd or cannot download the above app as this is a bit more complicated. Here is a guide showing how to access your filesystems on iPhone/iPod Touch.

Access the filesystem of your iPhone/iPod Touch

Go to the folder /System/Library/CoreServices

Edit the SystemsVersions.plist file
Change the firmware number AND build number.

You can now play games requiring OS 3.1!

Quite a few people out there are still having problem activating their MMS on their iPhone’s with AT&T whom have firmware OS 3.0.

Sosly from TheiPhoneSpot.net has created a fool-proof guide on how to get MMS working on your iPhone OS 3.0 100%.

Before I get to the point, there is another way of doing it which is to call AT&T and remind them to activate the MMS on your account. However if you do this, you may need to tell them a small white lie about about not being on firmware 3.0.

If you don’t feel comfortable with that, here is a 100% fool proof guide to doing the same thing (create to Sosly):

The download below is the 5.5 ipcc carrier settings update AT&T pushed out today to enable mms. The file has been edited by stealthbravo over at modmyi for us users who are wanting to stay on firmware 3.0. The edited file adds the internet tethering option and cellular data network settings along with the correct mms settings. The official unedited file adds mms but you don’t get the tethering option or the ability to edit your cellular data that is why if your like me, you will use this very helpful file that adds the extra features.

Download Edited IPCC File: AT&T US.ipcc (89)

After downloading the ipcc wait… You still have to do a few extra steps before using it because itunes doesn’t allow you to update your carrier settings using the ipcc file. Do the following exactly as stated:

Exit itunes completely

Windows

Click on start > run > type in cmd and press enter, you should end up with something like this if you did it right:

After press enter you will see a command prompt window pop up similar to this:

Now don’t type anything in copy and paste the following line into the command prompt:

“C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

Press enter after copying the above and nothing will happen, leave it as is

Connect your iphone to the computer

Open itunes from the start menu

Select your iphone under the list of devices

Hold SHIFT and CLICK CHECK FOR UPDATES. Navigate to the downloaded ipcc file you got and update your carrier settings

OSX

Close Itunes Completely

Open terminal

Copy and past the following line into terminal

defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

After copying the line to terminal press enter and nothing will happen just leave it as it is.

Connect your iphone to your mac

Open itunes

Select your iphone from the device list on the left

Hold OPTION and CLICK CHECK FOR UPDATES

Choose the downloaded ipcc file and reboot your iPhone

Note: Before you say this doesn’t work go to settings > general > network > cellular data network and make sure you have these settings. Click the images to enlarge

This ones for all the people out ther who accidently or purposely updated to the new iPhone 3GS to OS 3.1 only to realize that there is no jailbreak for it.

Well good news, Saurik (creator of Cydia) has figured out how to downgrade from OS 3.1 back to the jailbreak-able 3.0 firmware.

This is needed due to the fact that Apple have but restrictions on the iPhone 3GS to stop people who upgrade to downgrade.

It is all a bit technical so I am going to leave Saurik’s instructions as they are:

Instructions

To this end, I have constructed a server that duplicates the functionality exposed by Apple’s signature server, except using “on file” results rather than live requests.

All we need, then, is to make iTunes use it. Luckily, most operating systems also have the ability to locally define bypasses on specific hostnames through a file called hosts. Using this, we can redirect requests to Apple’s signature server to Cydia.

So, open the file C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts (Windows) or /etc/hosts (Mac OS X) and add the following entry to the bottom of the file.

74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

Now, when iTunes thinks it is talking to Apple, it is talking to Cydia instead. Doing this will allow iTunes to access signatures already stored by Cydia’s “on file” feature.

This server will also act as a cache for any SHSH blobs it hasn’t seen, acting as an intermediary to Apple’s server. This effectively registers your device with the “on file” mechanism, which means you can now enjoy the protections of being able to downgrade your firmware in the future even if you aren’t jailbroken.

This point should be stressed: even if you don’t jailbreak, and even if you never intend to jailbreak, you should consider using the new “on file” service.

Let’s say that Apple releases an OS upgrade in the future, you take it, and they break something important. Maybe they break your e-mail account, or your todo list. Your business is now crippled.

If only you could downgrade, right? Alas, Apple won’t let you anymore. That’s where the new signature cache server comes in: by doing your restores through this server you secure your ability to not accept upgrades from Apple if the need is dire.

Performing the Restore

Now, one would have hoped that the process would be as easy as “restore using the 3.0 IPSW”. If only we were that lucky. The first problem is that a downgrade from 3.1 to 3.0 must be initiated in DFU mode.

So, we begin: hold down the lock and menu buttons (some call these the power and home buttons) for 10 seconds, letting go of the lock button but continuing to hold menu until iTunes recognizes the device with the message: “iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes.”.

Note that, at this point, your iPhone’s screen should be entirely black. Many people confuse “DFU” with “recovery” (and in fact, iTunes itself glosses over this), but they are quite different. If you see anything on your screen, such as the iTunes logo and a sync cable, or a cartoon of Steve Jobs swearing in Cyrillic, you are in recovery mode and need to try again. One can find videos online that may help.

At this point, you should do a “normal” restore to the 3.0 software. When doing this, remember to hold down the option key (on Mac OS X) or the shift key (Windows) while clicking the Restore button in iTunes. Select the firmware (which is probably named iPhone2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw), and things should be on their way.

Please note that I do not have signatures for 3.0.1, only for 3.0. For some very small number of users I also have a signature for 3.0.1, but I ran out of time hitting the Wednesday deadline getting the code for this working and generalized.

If you would like to try restoring to 3.0.1 with my server, therefore, to see if you have 3.0.1 keys on file you can try, but it may fail late in the process with a very weird error. All users “on file”, however, have 3.0 ready to go.

Upcoming 3.1 Exploit

If you encouter “unknown error (3002)”, you probably do not have your ECID SHSH’s for 3.0 “on file” with Cydia. Unfortunately, as Apple is no longer allowing users to sign the 3.0 firmware, it is no longer possible to register your device with Cydia.

Luckily, it has been reported that iPhoneOS 3.1 is vulnerable to another exploit. This means that, once a jailbreak is released for 3.1, users will be able to prepare themselves for future jailbreaks even if they missed the first round of signature storage (which I unfortunately was only able to start very late in the 3.0 game).

Once you even attempt to use this service (or if you tell Cydia to “make your life easier”) you will be signed up for the signature tracker, and Cydia HQ will do its best to manage your ability to restore.

And again, if you have any issues with this process, please please please do not e-mail me. Instead, go to ModMyi.com, where there is a special forum called 3G[S] Downgrading, created for the purposes of this article.

NAND Format Invalid

OK, if you were already using 3.0 then this process should “just work”. However, if you had already upgraded to 3.1 you will encounted a nasty error: “The iPhone “iPhone” could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1015).”. This is expected behavior.

For people who are curious, what has happened is that a section of the NAND storage has been slightly reorganized in 3.1, and the 3.0 iBoot can no longer parse it. If we pulled out iRecovery and checked the iBoot logs over USB we’d see the following messages (the typos are Apple’s).

[WMR:ERR] NAND format invalid (mismatch, corrupt, read error or blank NAND device) [WMR:ERR] boolSignatureFound false boolProductionFormatVerified true nSig 0×0 ****************************************************************************** ****************************************************************************** AND: NAND initialisaton failed due to format mismatch or uninitialised NAND. AND: Please reboot with reformatting enabled. ****************************************************************************** ****************************************************************************** NAND FTL failed initialisation

The first time this happened to me I actually spent a while with MuscleNerd working out how to do what it asked: “reboot with reformatting enabled”. That was a severe waste of time: after you fix this, it still won’t boot, and you will need to go through a second restore to finish the process.

However, it turns out a second restore also formats the NAND correctly by itself. So, without bothering to do anything else to the device (leaving it in the recovery mode it is now in: DFU is no longer required), just start the restore over again in the same manner as before, once again selecting the 3.0 firmware.

Stuck in Restore

Unfortuntaely, this second restore is also going to fail (*sigh*), and irritatingly enough it is going to cause the exact same error message: “The iPhone “iPhone” could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1015).”. This is still expected behavior.

For those who are again curious, what has happened is that when the device turns on it has to decide what it is going to do: wait for instructions over USB, or continue into the boot process. This is determined by an NVRAM variable named auto-boot, which is currently set to “false”.

Normally this is set at the end of the restore process, but technically we were unable to finish the restore: it is my understanding that this is because upgrading to 3.1 installed the 3.1 baseband (which is currently not unlockable, btw), and the baseband upgrade in the 3.0 release then fails, stopping the restore.

However, that seems to be the last and least important part of the restore, so we technically won: we are never, though, going to be able to restore back to 3.0 without hitting this 1015 again, though.

Jailbreak with redsn0w or purplera1n

You have two. The first is to use iRecovery to manually set auto-boot to “true”, and the second is to just go ahead and jailbreak your device.

We will go ahead and do option #2 (jailbreak), as even just getting iRecovery working on your computer is something that I don’t look forward to trying to describe. ;P (In fact, it still isn’t working on my Windows computer.)

At this point, you can just run your jailbreak tool of choice, which should jailbreak the device and boot it into the normal operating system. Congratualations, you just overthrew your orwellian overlord, and have taken back control of your device.

At least today, we will prevail!

———————————————————————————————–

It all seems a bit complicated doesn’t it? If I find a more simplified guide of the downgrade I will post it.

You can read more about this on Saurik’s original post HERE.

This is not a 100% method because you cannot see the first charactor of the password but in generel, people don’t have random charactor passwords so it is easy enough to guess.

This exploit allows you to obtain EVERY single password that is hidden by the black dots (email passwords, twitter etc).

The exploit has is tried and tested on OS 3.0 but doesn’t work on OS 2.1 or 2.2 and has been fixed on 3.1.

Here is how to do it:

The latest version of the Safari Download Plugin is now being sold on the Cydia AppStore for $2. Some people cannot afford this or are unable to tranfer the money (don’t have Paypal etc) but instead of pirating it, here is a way to get the version before the one where you need to pay for it, for free.

This one isn’t as indepth as the newer version. The $2 plugin allows multiple downloads in the background whilst you surf. This one is the old fashion one where you can only download 1 file at a time.

However it works on 3.0 so its good enough for me.

It’s not much of a trick but what you need to do is download DTunes from Cydia and included in that download is a free version of the Safari download plugin for 3.0.

Plus with the DTunes, you can watch/listen to everything you download using the Safari Download Plugin.

So install DTunes from the ModMy source (already installed on your device).

Have you tried installing a Tap to Unlock unlockscreen but it didn’t look right because the ‘Slide to Unlock’ writing was getting in the way? With this guide, it will teach you how to change all the system settings to make that say whatever you want.

This uses a decoded version of the SpringBoard.strings file (decoded by NeoNightMareX – Thanks!).

Download the file: Stock 3.0 System Strings (236)

Open up the file in Notepad. If you want to edit the ‘Slide to Unlock’ string, click ctrl+F and type in Slide to Unlock. It will then find it for you so you can replace it.

Access your devices Filesystem (don’t know how? Here’s a guide)

Navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices/Springboard.app/English.lproj

Backup the original SpringBoard.strings file by calling SpringBoard.strings.bak.

Copy over the edited version from your computer.

Respring and voila, you have changed your system strings.

This tutorial is meant to help those having trouble breaking their 2nd generation iPod Touches. This guide is made for Windows, but the directions are similar on a Mac.

First, you must upgrade your device to software 3.0 though iTunes.  Pay the $10 free to upgrade ( or find another way to get the firmware ) and continue.  If you update through iTunes then the process is expained in iTunes.  If you obtain the Firmware from another source, save it in a location that you won’t forget.  Go to your iPod in iTunes, hold “shift” and click “restore”.  It will open a file browser window and you can upload your saved firmware. Let the iPod update.  Note that your files on your iPod will be replaced.  Your iTunes files will resync when the update is complete.

Next, download the latest version of Redsn0w from http://theiphoneproject.org/windows/redsn0w-win_0.7.2.zip and install it to your computer.  Run Redsn0w.  You will be prompted for the firmware file.  If you bought it through iTunes, it will be saved where iTunes keeps its restore files. If you need to, you can open iTunes and do the “shift-click” method again. Use the path given. If you obtain it from another source, it will be where you saved it.  Follow the directions in the Redsn0w program and it should be jailbroken.  Have fun!

If you are like me and had the tethered 2.2.1 jailbreak, restore it to your original firmware in iTunes first. Â Then proceed with the steps. Â Hopefully it saves you the headaches it saved me.

Troubleshooting: Â If something goes wrong, RESTART YOUR COMPUTER, then retry. Â That is the main cause of errors. Â Ask me questions here after you have already tried restarting.

Since the beginning I have never used SSH because originally I could never get it to work. So I search and searched around for an equivalent and I found one that it not really known by a lot of people. I think everyone should use it because it is more reliable that SSH because simply, it uses USB cable rather than over the air. Plus it has worked with every firmware I have been on from 1.1.1 to 3.0. It’s called Total Commander.

Total Commander with an extra plugin called T-Pot is the perfect equivalent to the SSH.I will host the plugin but for Total Commander, you should get it from the creators so you guys always get the newest version.

For Total Commander: Total Commander (EXTERNAL LINK) (1246)
For T-Pot Plugin: T-Pot (1166)

Firstly you will need to install the Total Commander program.

Download the T-Pot plugin from above. You do not need to extract it.

Open the Total Commander program. Because this program is free, you will need to press a certain number to start the program.

Then all you need to do is locate the T-Pot plugin you downloaded and double click on it IN THE TOTAL COMMANDER PROGRAM.

It should then say something about that this directory contains a plugin and it asks if you want to install it or not. Click yes to install.

Once it has finished, on the third row down from the top on the left beside where it says [preload] it says [-c-]. Click on that and change it to [-\-].

On the top it should say T-PoT. Click on it and you are now in the filesystems of your iPhone/iPod Touch.

To me it’s a simply way that SSH. Hope you guys find this guide useful.
