Coca Cola has managed to find a superb trick allowing iPod Touch 3rd generation 8GB only users to downgrade their unjailbreakable OS 3.1.3 firmware devices to OS 3.1.2 without the need of a stored SHSH on Cydia. This means, anyone whether or not they have been jailbroken before, can downgrade their OS 3.1.3 8GB iPod Touch 3rd generation to OS 3.1.2!

This downgrade works with the MC devices. If you downgrade you WILL Be able to jailbreak but it will be a tethered jailbreak. However, it is better than nothing!

The trick is actually rather simple. All you need to point the OS 3.1.2 iPod Touch 2nd Generation toward your iPod Touch 3rd gen and use it to downgrade your device. Here are step-by-step way of doing it created by Coca Cola:

Download iPod touch 2G 3.1.2 Firmware. *google it if you don’t know where to download*

Open up latest version of iTunes.

Make sure your iPod touch is on SpringBoard! Connect it

When you see it in your iTunes, go to it

Hold Shift+Restore on windows, Option+restore on mac

Choose the iPod Touch 2G 3.1.2 firmware!!

Let it’s do it’s thing.

When pwning it, make sure you use the 2G ipsw!

Gratz! Enjoy!

CREDITS ~ Coca Cola – Sufyan

The reason it doesn’t work with the iPod Touch 3rd generation with 16GB or 32GB is because the hardware for those devices are different and the iPod Touch 2nd generation firmware is not compatible with it. What Apple did was use the same processor in the 8GB as the 2nd generation to keep the price down at $199.

Once you have done this, you can use Redsn0w to jailbreak it. Here are some guides showing you how to do it:

How to Jailbreak your iPhone 3GS on OS 3.1.2 with Redsn0w 0.9.2 (WIN)

1. Download iPod touch 2G 3.1.2 Firmware. *google it if you don’t know where to download*

2. Open up latest version of iTunes.

From a recent tweet by the Dev Team member MuscleNerd, it is fair to assume that the Dev Team are definately working on a PwnageTool compatible with the OS 3.1.3 firmware that was released recently.

This is after the problem caused when Apple both released a new iPhone/iPod Touch firmware OS 3.1.3 (which contained only bugfixes) and the fact that they suddenly stopped signing the OS 3.1.2 firmware. This means users who needed to restore, couldn’t restore to OS 3.1.2 any more but only to OS 3.1.3.

There already are some jailbreaks for OS 3.1.3, Redsn0w and Sn0wybreeze, but as Redsn0w doesn’t work for the iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3rd gen, some users will still need PwnageTool. Sn0wybreeze is not getting very good reviews at the moment and it probably would be wise to wait for PwnageTool rather than Snowybreeze.

But as MuscleNerd says, if you are not having any trouble with OS 3.1.2, do not update. There is no point.

With the new Redsn0w program it is now possible to change the boot logo and enable verbose mode on OS 3.1.2 with all devices EXCEPT those with MC in their serial codes plus the iPod Touch 3rd generation.

Therefore, this guide only works on iPod Touch 1st and 2nd gen (without MC in serial code), the iPhone 2G, 3G and 3GS (without MC in serial code).

The guide is relatively simple. For this, you need two things:

Firmware OS 3.1.2 for your device: DOWNLOAD

Redsn0w: Redsn0w 0.9.2 (MAC) (789) or Redsn0w 0.9.2 (WIN) (7294)

What to do:

Unzip the Redsn0w program and place the .ipsw file in the Redsn0w application folder like so:

Open up the Redsn0w program and direct the program to the IPSW file for your device. And the following menu will pop up. Since this guide only works with non-MC serial coded devices, you click NO (if that is the right answer. If it’s yes, this guide is not for you).

Click next.

You will be presented with the below menu.

This guide assumes you have already got a jailbroken device and therefore you should deselect ‘Install Cydia’ and select ‘Already pwned’. You can then select verbose mode or the custom boot logos and you wish.
Note: Verbose mode changes you booting so that it shows what is happening within the device whilist it starts up. It is a punch of code running down the scree and looks pretty awesome

Click next and Redsn0w will ask you to put your device into Recovery mode (NOT DFU MODE). To do this, simply hold down both buttons until the recovery picture comes up (this can take a while, even 3 minutes). It will look like below:

Redsn0w will now automatically do its stuff. Leave the device along until it reboots again.

You will now have a custom boot logo and recovery logo.

Boot logos:

Here are some boot logos for you to select in the program:

Apple have decided to strike back at jailbreakers today and have stopped signing the OS 3.1.2 firmware for the iPhone and iPod Touch. That means that users who DID NOT save their TSS using Cydia TSS saving feature will no longer be able to restore to any firmware BUT 3.1.3.

It is OK for iPhone 2G & 3G and iPod Touch 1st and 2nd gen users as they can jailbreak with the new version of Redsn0w but for iPhone 3GS users and iPod Touch 3rd generation users this is bad.

For example, if you were to accidently mess up something on your iPhone 3GS and need to restore, you would not be able to restore to the jailbreak-able 3.1.2 firmware, iTunes would only allow you to restore to the OS 3.1.3 firmware.

From Saurik:

Apple’s TSS server stopped signing 3.1.2 today, so if Cydia does not state that you have 3.1.2 SHSH’s on file yet you are now “too late”.

——–

(If anyone had trouble using an “on file” SHSH from Cydia’s TSS server today, please try again: I am in the middle of a database migration.)

BigBoss has recommended currently jailbroken iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3rd gen user to be VERY careful with what they do on their devices until the next jailbreak-able firmware to avoid having to restore.

If you are a jailbreak user running a 3gs or ipod touch 3 (or later generation ipod touch 2) that has not stored the TSS in cydia, you should be very careful with what you do from now until the next jailbroken firmware. You will want to be careful in what you install to make sure you don’t have to restore for any reason.

If you have already stored your SHSH on Cydia before the past few days you should be OK as Cydia is currently storing the signature which allows you to restore to other firmwares that OS 3.1.3.

BigBoss’s also recommends users to learn how to SSH or use iPhone Folder to access your iPhone/iPod Touch’s filesystem and be able to fix problems yourself. If you need help fixing something, check out the AllTechRelated helpcenter.

Basically the bottom line is be careful with what you install on OS 3.1.2 if you have a jailbroken iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch 3rd generation and DO NOT RESTORE at any costs or else you will loose your jailbreak possibly forever. As I said, if you need help fixing something (instead of restoring) contact the AllTechRelated helpcenter and we will try and fix it together.

We recently posted a guide showing you how to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS on OS 3.1.2 with the new Redsn0w program for Windows. Well, here is the version of the guide which is for mac users.

Redsn0w is a jailbreaking tool created by the Dev Team which allows you to jailbreak your device as well as change the boot logo and enable verbose mode.

This guide is for Mac. For Windows go here.

Full credit for this guide goes to iClarified.com.

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0w from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the latest 3.1.2 firmware from below and place it in the same folder.

3.1.2 (3GS): iPhone2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw

Double click the redsn0w zip file to extract the redsn0w folder to the Pwnage folder.

Step Two
Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes.

Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Option and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won’t create any wasted space on your iPhone.

Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the firmware ipsw. Click the Open button to continue.

*Note: If you are already on the 3.1.2 firmware and have not jailbroken then you may skip this step.

Step Three
Once iTunes has finished updating your iPhone to the desired firmware open the Pwnage folder on your desktop and launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder we extracted earlier.

Step Four
Once RedSn0w opens click the Browse button

Step Five
Select the firmware ipsw we placed in the Pwnage folder on our desktop then click Open

Step Six
RedSn0w will ask you if this is a newer (fixed) model iPhone. Newer models of the iPhone 3GS have a fixed bootrom which requires you to connect your device to the computer each time you wish to reboot.

To find your serial number you can follow these instructions. The week number is usually the 4th and 5th digit of the serial number. For example, a serial number beginning with 88926 would be week 26 of 2009. 3GS units made week 45 or later will usually have a fixed bootroom. Before week 40 they usually have the older bootroom. Between weeks 40 and 45 the results vary.

If you believe your device has a fixed bootrom then press the Yes button. Otherwise press the No button.

If you accidentally select the wrong option you may have to do a full restore so please make this choice carefully.

Step Seven
Once the firmware has been verified click the Next button to continue.

Step Eight
RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data

Step Nine
From this window you can select the jailbreak options you would like. If you have already pwned your device check the Already pwned option.

Verbose boot displays detailed information on boot of your device and is generally only needed by developers and advanced users.

Make sure Cydia is selected. For this tutorial we will also select Custom boot logo and Custom recovery logo.

When you click to select each custom logo option a dialog window will appear asking you to select the image. Locate the image you would like to use then press the Open button.

*Remember the rules for boot logos are: RGB or Grayscale format with Alpha channel and dimension below 320×480.

Click the Next button to continue

Step Ten
RedSn0w will now instruct you on how to put your iPhone into recovery mode. Disconnect you iPhone 3GS from the computer then power it off. Then hold down the Home button while reconnecting the device to the computer. Don’t let go of the button until RedSn0w detects the iPhone and begins installation.

Step Eleven
Your iPhone will now reboot

Step Twelve
RedSn0w will then begin uploading the new RAM Disk and kernel.

Step Thirteen
Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. Click the Finish button. When your iPhone finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.

Finally there has been an Advanced Settings mod released for the latest iPhone and iPod Touch on firmwares 3.1.2.

This advance mod unlocks tons of secret features in the Settings application such as Emoji, reflective dock plus many more.

Overview
Well I have an another hack/mod for you people.

All I can say right now is that this mod will try to “unlock” hidden settings that your iPod can currently do. Sorta like supreme preferences. What’s better about this one is that it’s not buggy, just like my MV2I mod, and it integrates better with the Settings app. The only thing is that you will need Winterboard or I can make a permanent version (without winterboard).

New Features:
Power Management (Includes Auto-Dim, Custom Brightness, Numeric Battery, Disable Sleep Mode and Auto-Lock)
More Double-Tap Options
Reflective Dock
Emoji

Requirements
iPod touch 1G, 2G, 3G with 3.1.2 Firmware
Winterboard

Install:

Use TotalCommander to move the .deb file to the /tmp folder on your device.

Open up MobileTerminal (download it from Cydia if you haven’t got it).

Type in the following code dpkg -i /tmp/apref.deb

Open Winterboard and select the Advanced Settings to activate it.

Click to download: Advanced Preferences 3.1.2 (176)

I have just made the jump from OS 3.0 to OS 3.1.2 on the iPhone 3GS and encountered an error that when I did some research seems to be affecting quite a few users out there. This is the ‘Restoring from Backup’ loop that you suffer when you try and restore a backup of your phone onto your recently restored iPhone.

This is not only relating the the OS 3.0 to OS 3.1.2 jump but can happen to everyone on any firmware but regardless, we have a fix that works on any firmware.

The fix in itself is quite simply but was found by chance by Willius on Apple’s very own support forums.

All it involves is that when you do encounter the dreaded ‘Restoring from Backup’ loop and it isn’t progressing from that for a while, you simply need to unplug your iPhone, close iTunes fully (best done by CTRL+ALT+DELETE and stopping iTunes.exe’s process) and then pluging in your device once again.

The ‘Restore in Progress’ screen should appear on your device and after some minutes of this, all your backuped data will be back on your device.

Here is the second CommCenter hack that MuscleNerd announced. This one allows users to enable tethering on their iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS with OS 3.1.2.

For those who missed it, the first CommCenter hack is for iPhone 2G users who want MMS enabled on OS 3.1.2. View the guide.

Enabling Tethering on iPhone 3G, 3GS on OS 3.1.2

This is a CommCenter hack that allows iPhoen 3G and iPhone 3GS users who want to enable tethering on OS 3.1.2. This is a tricky and risky procedure. Only do this is you are confident in your abilities and are an advanced user.

MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP BEFORE DOING THIS AS YOUR IPHONE MAY GET STUCK ON THE BOOT LOGO.

NOTE: The Dev Team say that this shall be included in future PwnageTool so if you cannot manage this guide, wait until then!

Installation (guide courtosy of iClarified.com):

Prerequisites:

iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS Jailbroken on OS 3.1.2.

Be able to SSH or use Total Commander to access your iPhone’s filesystem.

You know your devices IP address on the local network.

Have Fungu (181)(external download) Installed.

Have downloaded the patch relating to your device:
For iPhone 3G: CommCenter (3G 3.1.2) (264)
For iPhone 3GS: CommCenter (3GS 3.1.2) (308)

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage. In it place the patch file for your appropriate device (DOWNLOADS ABOVE)

Step Two
Double the download zip file to extract its contents. You will get a folder called CommCenter_3g_312 or CommCenter _3gs_312.

Step Three
Launch Fugu from your applications folder.

Step Four
Input your iPhone’s IP Address in the Connect To: field and use root as the Username. Click the Connect button to continue. For this to work you must have SSH or Total Commander installed.

When prompted input alpine as the password then click the Authenticate button.

Step Five
Once Fugu opens the directory contents of your device, use the left panel to navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop.

Next, click the Go To.. button on the toolbar.

Input /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreTelephony.framework/Support/ into the Go To field, select Remotely, then click the Go button.

Drag the CommCenter file from the right panel into the left panel to copy it to your computer.

Step Six
Launch Terminal by double clicking it from the Applications:Utilities folder on your computer.

Execute cd Desktop/Pwnage to navigate to your Pwnage folder.

Execute bspatch CommCenter CommCenter-patched CommCenter_3g_312/CommCenter3g.patch to make a patched version of the CommCenter.

IMPORTANT: Remember to change 3g to 3gs if you have the iPhone 3GS. ie. bspatch CommCenter CommCenter-patched CommCenter_3gs_312/CommCenter.patch

Now we need to confirm that the patched file was created successfully. Input this command into the Terminal window to check: /usr/bin/openssl sha1 CommCenter-patched.

Check your SHA1 with the correct ones below to make sure the patch occurred successfully. If it did not. Do not continue.
1b19712035f33654cf72838ebe1a2033931b56b2 # 3GS
063165c3fa3e21d30eb4b486fab924ba3ef0ea5e # 3G

Step Seven
Return to Fugu and Control-Click CommCenter in the right panel. Select Rename from the contextual menu and rename the file to CommCenter-backup.

Click the Reload button on the toolbar if necessary then drag the CommCenter-patched file from the left panel to the right.

Control-Click the CommCenter-patched file from the right panel and select Get Info from the contextual menu. At the bottom of the Info window change the permissions to 0755 and click the Apply button.

Control-Click the CommCenter-patched file in the right panel and select Rename from the contextual menu. Rename the file to CommCenter.

Step Eight
You may now reboot your iPhone and you will be able to use Internet Tethering.
Thank you to iClarified for the guide.

Enjoy tethering on your iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS!

MMS on iPhone 2G:

Steps:
Backup original CommCenter (goes without saying…)
Replace CommCenter in: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreTelephony.framework/Support/ with the patched one.
Chmod the new CommCenter to 755
Open /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/M68AP.plist and insert a true boolean value for “mms” under capabilities

If you can’t manage this then you shouldn’t be attempting it!

Yesterday we posted an unofficial undate to PwnageTool so that it was compatible with OS 3.1.2 but as I said, it was unofficial. Well in response to this, the Dev Team have gone ahead and released their official version of PwnageTool which works with OS 3.1.2 along with 1 bonus.

The iPhone 3GS is now compatible!

Click to download (Mac): PwnageTool 3.1.4 (37)

Here is all the information on the new PwnageTool MAKE SURE YOU READ ALL OF IT!

Here are some details on our latest version of PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X which supports the 3.1.2 release of the iPhone software for iPhone 2G/3G/3GS and iPod Touch 1G/2G.

If you’re already jailbroken (by whatever means), you don’t need to mess around with DFU mode at all. Just create (or get from a friend) your custom IPSW and Option-Restore (Shift-Restore on Windows) to it via iTunes. Don’t enter DFU mode at all. Please make sure you are restoring to the custom IPSW, not the stock one from Apple! For best results, use the latest iTunes (9.0.1) — which includes a nice new application organizer.

This release allows your baseband to remain unlocked at 3.1.2, but it does not unlock a new baseband put there by restoring to official 3.1.x. It is super important that people who need the unlock to understand they can keep it only by starting at 3.0 (or earlier) and updating solely to custom IPSWs that don’t update the baseband. For those who have been onboard the “unlock train”, simply install ultrasn0w via Cydia once you’ve restored to your custom IPSW. Don’t forget to turn off the “3G” setting in Settings->General->Network if you use T-Mobile in the U.S.A.

Note for 3GS users not already jailbroken and stuck at 3.1.x: this version of PwnageTool has a side feature to jailbreak your 3GS. It uses a simple implementation of the usb control msg hole found by chronicdev, geohot, and our very own gray. Now that the hole is public and in use, we expect Apple to close it by the next major firmware update. That’s why 3GS users need to get their ECID hashes for 3.1.x now, and need to stay onboard the “jailbreak train” in all future updates. For more details on what this means, please see our earlier posts or ask in our comments section (moderated by the always helpful @angie and @confucious!).

For the early adopters who ran blackra1n and are having problems with mobilesubstrate, winterboard, diskaid, or ifunbox, you can install a custom .ipsw from PwnageTool to fix these issues. That’s because all jailbroken devices accept a custom .ipsw created by PwnageTool. (However, if you ran blackra1n on a 3G or 3GS that means you updated to stock 3.1.x, and the carrier unlock is now out of reach. We’ll continue to work on a carrier unlock for the latest basebands, but the timeframe for such an unlock is unknowable.)

Note: If you use internet tethering on a carrier that doesn’t officially support it, you’ll lose it by going to 3.1.x. Stay back at 3.0 until a hack for that is developed.

SUMMARY:

The iPhone 3GS is now supported out of the box in PwnageTool 3.1.4 (or if you have upgraded to 3.1.x in iTunes)

The iPod 2G is still supported in PwnageTool 3.1.4 but you must already be jailbroken (we’ll update this if there’s a big demand from non-jailbroken ipt2G owners)

The iPod touch 3G is NOT supported

DETAILS:

GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G(S) with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service then you should only update your device with an .ipsw that is made with the new PwnageTool. There are no second chances with this. You need to remember that PwnageTool will provide an upgrade path to newer versions of the iPhone software in the future.

Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.

Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.

At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.1.4 capable version of PwnageTool.

PwnageTool will work for the iPhone 3GS

PwnageTool will work for the iPod touch 2G

PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G(S) and the iPod touch (1st Generation and 2nd Generation) but NOT the iPod touch 3rd generation.

For 3G and 3G(S) users who are Pwned, PwnageTool is your key to updating in the future, just remember to never install an update directly from Apple, always use an .ipsw that has been created with PwnageTool.

There is no Windows version of PwnageTool it is a Mac OS X tool only, we are not developing a Windows version of PwnageTool.

What’s a Baseband?

The ‘baseband’ is the generic nickname given to the internal components of the iPhone that handle the phone calls and Internet access. This ‘baseband’ is a tiny and unique independent computer system that runs inside your iPhone, it is separate to the main system that handles the applications (such as email and google maps) and it talks to the main part of the phone over an internal communications network.

Think of it like a cable modem or other peripheral that is attached to your home PC that needs occasional updates. When a software update is released and presented to you within iTunes the baseband is sometimes updated (to fix bugs or add new features).

The 3.1.2 update for the iPhone 3G and 3GS contains such an update, so running the vanilla updater straight away with iTunes will reprogram and update the baseband.

WHICH DEVICE DO I HAVE?

Read the description to identify your device, once you have correctly identified your device follow the specific instructions for that device as listed below.

SIM Free/SP Unlocked/Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G(S)

This applies if you bought your iPhone 3G(S) for $$$$$$$. This model of iPhone 3G(S) doesn’t have an Service Provider lock (aka factory unlocked) and you are able to put any SIM card into the phone and get service. Your phone is already unlocked so you do not need to worry about baseband updates, you can use PwnageTool to create an ipsw and then use this to update and jailbreak your phone.

As you guys all know the Blackra1n jailbreak by GeoHot was released a couple of hours ago. The jailbreak works on all the devices out there are can jailbreak firmware 3.1.2.

I was looking around for a good guide to post to make sure it is as clear as possible for everyone to jailbreak and I have found one now. In general the jailbreak is a VERY simple process to do but if you do get stuck, check out this guide!

All credit for the guide goes to DigitalMarketingTalk.com.

Requirements:

iPhone OS 3.1.2.

Windows Operating System (Mac version will be coming out later)

iPhone 2G, 3G or 3GS running on Firmware 3.1.2 and on an official carrier.

iPod 1G, 2G or 3G running on Firmware 3.1.2 and on an official carrier.

Downloaded Blackra1n.exe (241)

Reminder: If your iPhone is unlocked via ultrasn0w then please stay away from Blackra1n. Blackra1n is for those users who aren’t worried about losing their unlock ability(moving to baseband 05.11.07). So, if you want to preserve your baseband do not use this tool.

1) Download the Blackra1n jailbreak: Blackra1n.exe (241)

2) On the following screen, click on save file

3) Browse to the location where you downloaded the file and double click on Blackra1n.exe

4) Make sure your iPhone or iPod is connected to the computer then click on make it ra1n button.

5) Your device will now enter recovery mode.

6) Click OK when you get the following screen

8 )Select the installer application (Choose Cydia) that you prefer and press the install button at the top right corner of your screen.

9)BlackRa1n will automatically download and install the package you selected.

10) Congrats you just jailbroke your iPhone using Blackra1n. Kudos to GeoHot!

Note: After you are done installing cydia. If you want to remove the blackra1n icon on your iPhone, just tap on the icon and you will find an uninstall blackra1n option at the bottom.

Enjoy!
