An unofficial version of the Dev Team’s PwnageTool has been released onto the interweb which allows iPhone 3GS users (old bootrom only) to jailbreak their iPhone on iOS 4.0.2. So posts teaches you how to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.0.2 with an official version of PwnageTool.

Please note: That there is no real reason to update to iOS 4.0.2, because all it does it fix the PDF exploit used in the iOS 4.0/4.0.1 jailbreakme.com website. However, a fix has already been released onto Cydia for the PDF exploit so really, there is no need to update! but if you still want to, follow this guide!

Please note 2: This version of PwnageTool was NOT released by the Dev Team so use at your own risk!

If you have an iPhone 3G or an iPod Touch 2nd generation and would like to jailbreak, use THIS GUIDE instead.

If you already have iOS 4.0.2 and have previously jailbroken (and have backuped your SHSH blobs from an earlier firmware), downgrade your iPhone to a jailbreakable firmware!

What you need:

What to do:

  1. Update to the latest version of iTunes and sync up your iPhone to allow it to backup all your contacts, music etc.
  2. Download the PwnageTool and iOS 4.0.2 firmwares from above and place them both a folder called ‘AllTechRelated’ on your folder.
  3. Open up PwnageTool and click on the iPhone logo.
  4. Clicking on the next button will cause the program to automatically find what firmware you iPhone is on. If it doesn’t, click on the ‘Browse for IPSW…’ button and point it towards the iOS 4.0.2 file you downloaded earlier.
  5. Clicking next will bring you to the following questions ‘Do you have an iPhone contract that would activate normally through iTunes?’ Click yes if you use an official carrier like AT&T or no if you want to unlock your iPhone (hacktivate it).
  6. Let the program create the custom IPSW file for you.
  7. Open up iTunes and plug in your iPhone. ALT+Restore your iPhone to the custom IPSW file you created.
  8. Let your iPhone update and congratulations, you now have a jailbroken version of iOS 4.0.2 installed!

NOTE: If after opening Cydia, there are no packages to be found, click on Manage –> Sources –> Add and type in the following:

To unlock your iPhone afterwards, use THIS GUIDE.
