[UPDATE 1] Jailbreaking & Unlocking is Officially Legal!

Posted by psp2468 July - 26 - 2010 - Monday

Apple have been trying to make jailbreaking, allowing unauthorized apps to run on their iDevices, illegal for a while now. But there has been a huge set-back for Apple as new government rules say that users can now break the electronic block that allows them only to use authorized by Apple apps and use unauthorized apps instead – in other words jailbreaking!

Not only this, but the new rules also say that breaking the electronic lock between phone and SIM card is not illegal meaning that unlocking your iPhone after jailbreaking is not illegal either!

These new rules are going to be annoucned this Monday. This is great news for the jailbreaking community, but not so great for AT&T and Apple! Steve Jobs must be fuming!

UPDATE: TheElectronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has posted a press release announcing these changes:

On balance, the Register concludes that when one jailbreaks a smartphone in order to make the operating system on that phone interoperable with an independently created application that has not been approved by the maker of the smartphone or the maker of its operating system, the modifications that are made purely for the purpose of such interoperability are fair uses. Case law and Congressional enactments reflect a judgment that interoperability is favored. The Register also finds that designating a class of works that would permit jailbreaking for purposes of interoperability will not adversely affect the market for or value of the copyrighted works to the copyright owner.

To jailbreak your iPhone, iPod Touch or even iPad, you can check out our compatability table which will let you know if you can and how to jailbreak your iDevice on all firmwares.

If you are wondering why it is that you should jailbreak, you can check out this post and let us convince that it is better!
