How to Change your Boot Logo on OS 3.1.2 without Restoring

Posted by psp2468 February - 4 - 2010 - Thursday

With the new Redsn0w program it is now possible to change the boot logo and enable verbose mode on OS 3.1.2 with all devices EXCEPT those with MC in their serial codes plus the iPod Touch 3rd generation.

Therefore, this guide only works on iPod Touch 1st and 2nd gen (without MC in serial code), the iPhone 2G, 3G and 3GS (without MC in serial code).

The guide is relatively simple. For this, you need two things:

What to do:

  1. Unzip the Redsn0w program and place the .ipsw file in the Redsn0w application folder like so:
  2. Open up the Redsn0w program and direct the program to the IPSW file for your device. And the following menu will pop up. Since this guide only works with non-MC serial coded devices, you click NO (if that is the right answer. If it’s yes, this guide is not for you).

    Click next.
  3. You will be presented with the below menu.

This guide assumes you have already got a jailbroken device and therefore you should deselect ‘Install Cydia’ and select ‘Already pwned’. You can then select verbose mode or the custom boot logos and you wish.
Note: Verbose mode changes you booting so that it shows what is happening within the device whilist it starts up. It is a punch of code running down the scree and looks pretty awesome :)
  4. Click next and Redsn0w will ask you to put your device into Recovery mode (NOT DFU MODE). To do this, simply hold down both buttons until the recovery picture comes up (this can take a while, even 3 minutes). It will look like below:
  5. Redsn0w will now automatically do its stuff. Leave the device along until it reboots again.

You will now have a custom boot logo and recovery logo.

Boot logos:

Here are some boot logos for you to select in the program:

Absolutely amazing! This is not limited to RedSn0w only jailbreaks. I used it on my BlackRa1n Jailbroken iPod Touch 2G on 3.1.2 firmware and it worked like a charm! Simply amazing!

However, the verbose mode is kind of silly … what’s the point of verbose mode when you are trying to add a custom boot image? Verbose mode defeats the whole purpose as the boot logo only flashes on the screen for a split second and then you get all of the output text. Verbose mode is ok when you are trying to see what is being processed … but there is no use for it when you want to make it look pretty.

Wait, won’t using redsn0w + stock firmware and letting redsn0w “do it’s thing” restore your iPhone to the factory defaults, thus deleting all your apps and forcing the user to re-install everything from Cydia? Or am I missing something?

I’d like to enable verbose boot, but I do NOT want to go through the process (again! LOL I’ve done it like 7 times this week alone! Long story) and have to reinstall all my Cydia apps, re-create all my Categories folders, etc.

Can anyone shed light on this? (I’ll probably figure it out myself, as I have a spare 3G sittig here, so I’ll drop some apps in from Cydia & iTunes, then run this and see what happens…it’s a 2G, but shouldn’t be much, if any different, a process on my 3Gs.)

No as during the process you click ALREADY JAILBROKEN it will not delete anything on your iPod and won’t rejailbreak it or anything. All it will do is install the custom boot logo/verbose mode. Just make sure you follow the guide and you should be fine :)

Sigh, the given images are not in ING format (required) and once converted they are too large. I dont feel like downloading new software to compress it, so i guess i will have to find a new pic.

The process worked as planned however, and i am grateful for it.
