Installing Custom Firmware via ChickHEN on PSP 1000, 2000 & 3000 UPDATED

Posted by psp2468 August - 11 - 2009 - Tuesday

Elite999 on the QJ.net forums (a great forum by the way) has posted a brilliant guide teaching us exactly how to install custom firmware on any PSP (PSP 1000, 2000 & 300o) no matter what motherboard they have.

This involves using the ChickHEN .tff exploit on PSP with firmware 5.03 so if you have above that version, I’m afraid this will not work.

Without further ado, here is the guide (all credit goes to Elite999)

How-To Install CFW on PSP-1000,2000,3000 (Un/Hackable Mother Boards)

What do you need:

1 – PSP-1000, 2000, or 3000 (hackable motherboard or non-hackable motherboards).

2ChickHEN v2 (8219).

35.03 Firmware Update (5436).

45.03 GEN-A for HEN (4124) or CFE 3.60 (328) or CFW 5.03GEN-B for HEN (1176) or 5.03GEN-C (1200).

Upgrading to 5.03 OFW
Note

If you have 5.03 firmware installed, then skip this section.

1 – Download 5.03 Firmware Update (5436) .

2 – Create a folder called UPDATE in PSP/GAME on your memory stick.

3 – Extract the archive, and Place the EBOOT.PBP in the UPDATE folder.

4 – Run the 5.03 Firmware update from the game menu in XMB.

5 – When the updater finishes, you will have 5.03 installed. The firmware required to run ChickHEN.

Booting to ChickHen R2
For PSP 2k,3k

If you want to boot ChickHEN R2 on these kind of PSPs (2k,3k). I recommend you use this modded version of ChickHen. It is guaranteed to work in the first try.
P.S : The same steps apply with this one too.

*If you have a Japanese PSP, then I recommend you change the Character Set in System Configuration to US if you don’t have it set to there yet.

1 – Download ChickHEN v2 (8219) . Open the ChickHEN R2 archive. For slim users(psp-2000,3000): place the folder inside Slim with gif images into your PSP memory stick PICTURE folder (ms0:/PICTURE) (later it will be PICTURE/ChickHEN), for fat users(psp-1000): place the folder inside FAT with gif images into your PSP memory stick location PICTURE folder.

2 – Now place the h.bin into the root of your memory stick pro duo. Where the folders PSP, MUSIC etc are located.

3 – Go back into settings in your psp and turn off UMD Auto-Start and UMD Cache.

4 – Place the memory stick into the PSP, and navigate to your photos folder, and enter the ChickHen folder. Wait, you will see five egg giff images, these will start to load thumbnails. Your PSP may freeze and reset. Just keep retrying and ChickHEN R2 will load up….But if you see flashing colors, your PSP will reboot loading the ChickHen.

Now you can only play homebrew games, but for the real fun continue following the guide to install custom firmware on your psp!

WARNING

If you installed the two CFWs GEN and CFE on the same PSP without installing one of them first, you won’t be able to play PSX games. Except if you have a hackable mobo VIA Pandora.

  • If you have a fat psp, then I recommend to install 5.00m33-6 directly (CFE and GEN won’t work on PSP fat) using a pandora battery rather than going in all of these procedures. If you don’t have a Pandora battery, then use this guide for installing it VIA Hellcat’s Recovery flasher on 5.03 OFW!

How to install 5.03 GEN-C

Remark!

You don’t have to be on 5.03 GEN-A/B to update to 5.03 GEN-C.

1 – Download 5.03GEN-C (1200) for ChickHen R2.

2 – Extract the ZIP, and drag the “GEN-C” folder to PSP/GAME folder on memory stick.

3 – Run the updater VIA XMB->Game Menu.

4 – When the process finishes, press X. The PSP will reboot.

How to install 5.03 GEN-B

1 – Download CFW 5.03GEN-B for HEN (1176) for ChickHen R2.

2 – Extract the ZIP, and drag the “5.03GEN-B” folder to PSP/GAME folder on memory stick.

3 – Run the updater VIA XMB->Game Menu.

4 – When the process finishes, press X. The PSP will reboot.

How to install 5.03 GEN-A

1 – Download custom firmware 5.03GEN-A for ChickHen R2 from the download link supplied above.

2 – Connect your PSP to the computer in USB Mode.

3 – Extact the 5.03GEN-A_for_HEN.zip archive for example to your desktop.

4 – Double-click on LAUNCH-ME.exe (GUI) which can be found inside the folder extracted.

Note

Now if the program didn’t launch and showed an error, then continue reading this step, if not then continue to the following step. Download .Netframework 2.0, which is the minimal version that can run “LAUNCH-ME.exe”. When the download finishes, install .NET framework. Then launch “LAUNCH-ME.exe (GUI)”. If it still displays an error, just PM me.

5 – Choose options PSP-2000 or PSP-3000 (depends of your PSP). Mode : Choose option FULL. Set driver of your psp for example: G, H, F, etc… It depends on the usb port that the psp is connected to. Click start, the files are being copied to your psp.

6 – Disconnect the PSP from USB. Navigate to the game menu, enter your memorystick, then launch the main EBOOT.PBP.

7 – When the application loads, press L or R to flash the firmware in your flash. YOU ONLY NEED MAKE IT ONE TIME!

8 – Last but not least, press () to reboot in the custom firmware.

You are now in the world of custom firmware.

How to slightly alter the risk of losing CFW (GEN-A/B) :

What does the plugin do?

  • Patch the Reboot of the PSP.
  • Patch the Shutdown of the PSP.
  • Hide UMD Update Icon.
  • Patch flash 0, 1, 2, 3 for USB access.
  • Redirecting the file version.txt to ms0:/PSP/SYSTEM/version.txt.
  • Patch the blit TIFF image “blit corrupted data for file with extension .tiff”.

1 – Download Sedna for CFW 5.03 GEN-A/B (233).

2 – Extract it, and Copy the folder seplugins in the root of your Memory Stick.

3 – copy this line ms0:/seplugins/Sedna.prx 1 in the file X:/seplugins/vsh.txt, X:/seplugins/game.txt. When that is done, the CFW becomes permanent.

Note

X : Is the letter of the PSP device (ms0, memory stick).

Some notes about Sedna:

  • If you reboot your PSP via power switch, your PSP will be back to 5.03 OFW.
  • You can reboot the PSP via reboot device option in the vsh menu and you’d still be on 5.03 GEN-A/B.
  • Shutdown option in VSH places the PSP in Standby.
  • This plugin prevents access of any flash files (Flash0 or 1 or 2 or 3) to prevent permanent brick accidents.
  • It makes the version.txt which shall be in flash0/vsh/etc/ in ms0:/PSP/SYSTEM/ so that you can still use version.txt, although you can’t access Flash0 files.
  • It hides the UMD update icon , to prevent you from updating to OFW higher than 5.03. Updating your 5.03 firmware will lead to the destruction of chances to place custom firmware on your PSP.

How to install CFE 3.60 MHU
Note

If you are on 5.03 GEN-A, and want to install CFE 3.60 or vice versa, check the section after this one.

1CFE 3.60 (328) A.K.A 3.60 MHU A.K.A 5.00 M33-6 for unhackable PSPs VIA Pandora.

2 – Extract the archive and prepare the folder “CFWEnabler” to be copied (it is located in PSP/GAME after the archive is extracted).

3 – Connect your PSP to the computer, and copy CFWEnabler folder to PSP/GAME.

4 – Run the updater from game menu in XMB.

5 – Click on the first option and accept.

Note

After the first time you install CFE, don’t install it again. If your PSP crashes or shutsdown due to any reason, just launch the updater and don’t press anything. It will automatically reboot your PSP to CFE.

Uninstalling GEN-A then installing CFE or vice versa:

Note

You need version older than 3.60 to uninstall CFE or GEN-A. GEN-A installer doesn’t have an option to uninstall CFW files in flash0, so we will use CFE 3.30 here.

1 – Download CFE 3.30 (0).

2 – Extract the archive and prepare the folder “CFWEnabler” to be copied (it is located in PSP/GAME after the archive is extracted).

3 – Connect your PSP to the computer, copy CFWEnabler folder to PSP/GAME, and run it from XMB.

4 – Press the option to uninstall CFW files (GEN-A files or CFE files), it will uninstall both if they are present.

5 – When you finish, choose if you want to update to CFE 3.60 or GEN-A. After you finish, follow the 5.03 GEN-A section if you want to install GEN firmware, or follow the CFE 3.60 section if you install it.

Remarks!
  • These kinds of CFW are not permanent (unless you have GEN-A/B Sedna patched). If you shutdown the psp, the psp will not load the custom firmware again. You need to reload ChickHen R2, then launch EBOOT.PBP of GEN-A and press o when you enter the menu.
  • Because of that, I recommend just using the standby mode.
  • When you have installed the custom firmware in your flash, you can remove the “files” folder in the MS ROOT.For your own safety, it is better to rename or erase the prx called “flasher.prx” in the MAIN APP folder to avoid wrong flashing times.
  • Don’t ever flash an irrelevant firmware to your psp-2000,3000 (flash0) (unhackable motherboards). This will result in a permanent brick that can’t be fixed until a new exploit is found.

When you say “it should be 3.52m33-4 and above.” does it mean 4 m33 if so, can my psp with firmware 4.01 install 5.03?

  2. Peter says:

Will they release firmware 6.0 for ChickHEN? I have a PSP2000 with the v3 mobo and the only way to play ISOs is to use ChickHEN and flash the firmware. I got the new GT game and it requires 6.0 to play. Any suggestions on what I can do?

  3. Dharius says:

Hmmz , i’m quite confused…Haven’t tried it yet. I’m still figuring out if i have a PSP 1000 or PSP 2000. Hmmz but from what i think i have the psp 1000. But to be 100% Sure how do i know wich PSP version i have..? Well if i’m correct the costum firmware is only able with the 5.03 official PSP firmware right? And will it be able to be installed on a PSP 1000 ? Cause this part ” 2 – Download the ChickHEN R2 From the download link supplied above. Open the CHickHEN R2 archive. For slim users(psp-2000,3000): ” makes me really confused :) Anyways would love to hear some feedback.

    Cheers dharius.

    • admin says:

To check what PSP you have you can simply remove your PSP battery and underneith there will be a 4 digit number for example 1000, 1004, 2000 or whatever. That is the PSP you have :)

  4. Dharius says:

ahh thnx , says psp 1004…Am i still able to do this on mine with the official firmware of 5.03? Well i’m an European..Will this also be a matter of the instalation? :)

    Cheers dharius.

    • admin says:

Ya thats good. You have a PSP 1000. You can do it.

It does not affect anything that the PSP is European. As long as you follow the guide you should be fine :)

If you have any more questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

  7. kenneth says:

Hi, good day. I have PSP3000 with version 5.51. Is it still possible to do the procedure with this version or I need to downgrade it first. Thank you

  8. Lemuel says:

I have PSP 1001 v5.03, if i’m going to follow all your instruction will I be successful? And can i also play PS one games and other nintendo games?

    • admin says:

Yes if you follow the guide to the tee, you will be succesful.

Yes you will be able to play PS1 games and Nintendo 64 games.

  9. Wendel says:

I have a psp 2000 (the hackable one), with firmware 5.00 M33-6. Now, I would like to go to original firmware, 6.00, so I can buy and play current games on psn.

That should be ok, except that I had some original games stolen (things like FF Tactics, Patapon, and even God of War), and I’m not willing to buy them again (I still have the covers, just lost the umds). So I was thinking, is there a way to update to OFW 6.00 and later use chickhen on it to go back temporarily to CFW 5.00 M33 (or even those “GEN”) just to play those isos ?

  10. Daniel says:

hello, i have a blue (slim i believe) psp version 5.03, im not sure if it is 1000, 2000, or 3000 cause i just bought it used and the battery wont come out for some reason lol. anyways i dont want to buy the pandora battery cause im low on money aqnd dont want to break the case to get the battery out so can i use the chickhen r2 and the 5.03 gen-a for hen to flash a permanent fw that can run homebrew/iso/spps etc. and run custom themes? even if this is not recommended is it possible? please respond cause ive been searchin everywhere for the answer to this but mine is a little specicfic.

    • admin says:

You can put 5.03GEN-B on your PSP which allows homebrew, iso, apps etc. You do not need a Pandora battery because instead you use the ChickHEN exploit to do it.

However, you will NOT be able to install any proper themes at all. It’s not that it isn’t recommended, it is that it WILL brick your PSP.

      Link to 5.03GEN-B: http://blog.alltechrelated.com/2009/11/02/5-03-gen-b-for-hen-out-now-cfw-on-your-psp-3000/

If you have anymore questions, do not hesitate to ask :)

      • Daniel says:

thank you so much for your reply, i got my battery off and i have version 2000. i have already got gen-b and updated it theo only thing is it takes me litterally around 20 times to get chickHEN to load on my psp and since ive been foolin around with homebrew it keeps freezing causing me to attempt to keep running chickHEN. right now i cant get it to load ive tried 15+ times and it wont load, though it works for others it is frustrating me. plus i want a proper theme and permanent fw. is there a permanent fw like gen-b that enables all games playable and can i flash my psp using chickHEN r2?

  11. Raj says:

I’m confused with “beware it should be 3.52m33-4 and above”

Does this procedure require a cfw, or could it work with 3.52 ofw?

I assume it’s the latter because this also applies to unhackable (thus, ofw) psps, but I just want to make sure.

  12. Steven says:

I have a psp3000. I had already loaded the ChickHenR2 but when set-up the custom firmware 5.03 gen-A but when i run the custom firmware, it was able to run but the application won’t load instead it turns black and restarted my psp. What should i do to make the uploader thing work ?

    • admin says:

Are you sure the ChickHEN worked? Otherwise try downloading it again. Maybe it got corrupted or something. What folder at you putting it in? Game?

      • steve says:

        HI all
        I have installed chickhen finally(noob)
but when i install the cfw it acts like all is well and instead of rebooting it justs shuts down and im back to ofw…help please if thoust can
        Thanks dudes!!!!!!1

  13. steve says:

oh yeah i am on a psp 1003…or100…4

    • admin says:

When you reboot, you need to re-run the CFW application. It will not hack it again but simply but you back into the ‘hacked’ mode. I know it’s a hastle :(

EDIT: But also, with a Pandora battery you can downgrade your PSP a earlier firmware and have proper CFW lie 5.00m33.

  14. mg says:

I accidently flashed it twice, and now the ChickHEN won’t load. I’m not sure if it’s that I shouldn’t have flashed it or if it is that I’m just not doing ChickHEN right (Last time it took me about 3hrs to get it to load).I have ofw 5.03(Given), already did the CFE 3.60, and flashed my PSP twice. Any ideas?

  15. roh don says:

you know if i stay at custom firmware 5.00 m33-6, will i still be able to play new games and stuff

  16. jufran says:

hey does it work in psp 1000?

how about in the LaunchMe.exe(gui), what will i choose there? 2000 or 3000?

  17. Jack_Move says:

    Hello,

I am basically having the same issue as Ritzie who posted on 10-11-09. I have ofw 5.03 installed and everything from Chickhen in the proper places. Even with adding Giff’s I still can not get the Tiff file to load. It just sits there like a normal picture. If you open it the picture will not load & it will hard reset the psp. It is a PSP Phat 1001 & had ofw 1.50 on it before I upgraded it to 5.03. I have tried a Scandisk 512meg mem stick & also the stock 32mb Sony mem stick, but does not make a difference. Anyone out there have any idea’s? Thanks

    • admin says:

The solution for me was to Restore to Default Settings and do it straight after that. That’s what worked for me :)

      • Jack_Move says:

I Managed to get ChickHEN to run. Issue seemed to be reformatting the mem card & I had to use 4 Giff’s with the Tiff. For some reason I could not get CFW Enabler 3.51 or 3.60 to run correctly. It would start, but then just go back to the psp menu. So I used Xgen v4 to install cfw 5.50-D & then updated it to 5.50-D2 . It installed fine using ChickHEN v2 as a work around for not having cfw already installed. Got everything from PSP-HACKS =)

  18. Jack_Move says:

On a side note I think the best way to not become the owner of a Brick is to get ChickHEN v2 installed and running. Then download & install Pspident to see what motherboard & so on you really have for sure. Here is a link for a chart that tell you if you can fully install cfw or not. http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd37/thirty5tech/chickhenchart.jpg

  20. Geordie says:

Hey, I have the psp 1000 and I got Chickhen to work after forever but I got to the stage of the CFW installation and it asks about the model but only gives you options for 2000/3000! Where do I go from here? Which option should I choose? Thank you!

  22. neverbetter says:

Looks like a great and straightforward guide. However, i’m new to flashing the psp and have a question.

My PSP says 1001 under the battery and I have the original 5.03 FW. All I have to do is boot to ChickHen R2 and I can start playing homebrew off the memory stick? What exactly is the 5.03 Gen-A,B,C custom firmware for?

  23. Taylor says:

I have a psp fat, and I can’t get it to go into ChickenHEN mode. I’ve tried everyone’s solution here, but none seem to work. I go to my pictures folder on my psp, wait for the .tiff to load, and eventually my psp shuts itself off and never booting back on. :/ Can anyone help me?

  24. Hevin says:

Hey it says you’ll see 5 egg giff pictures. i see only four where is the other. oh and do we have to create a folder in the picture folder. my psp is 1000. and where do we put h.bin.

  25. jason says:

hello.. wanna ask here.. do the CFW gen-c have the uninstall option? how can we uninstall it??

    • admin says:

If you want to fully uninstalled, you can update to a HIGHER firmware. Or, if you already have 5.03GEN-C, if you simply turn off your device fully it it will be ‘disabled’so it will not seem like you are hacked.

To enable it again, you would need to rerun the ChickHEN exploit and then the 5.03GEN-C installer.

      • jason says:

i cant update to higher sinve i have the TA88v3 motherboard..
now i have the CFWEnabler v3.70 I can uninstall it…
But, i scared to try out the Gen-C since it dont have uninstaller just in case i need to uninstall it from my psp…

Will installing the Gen-C will flash my psp like the CFWEnabler do??

        Thanks

        • jason says:

i mean by uninstall is remove all the files from flash… not only ‘disable’ it.. tq..

          • admin says:

It’s not possible without going away from 5.03 firmware. You can if you don’t mind updating to a higher firmware (which is unhackable).

  26. Goaty says:

Hey, I cannot tell if I am in ChickHEN mode or not. I updated to 5.03, then tried the ChickHENv2 method first, just shut off my PSP, turned it back on to try again, now when I go to the folder on my PSP nothing happens. So I did the ChickHENMod method, froze the PSP and turned off, went to go try again, now it just sits at the Gifs not freezing at all.

If it’s working, then the next step, what CFW do you recommend for my psp 1001 phat. All I want to do is play PSx games. So whatever allows me to do this, I want it :P thanks.

    thks

    • admin says:

Well I’m assuming you mean the ChickHEN exploit itself and therefore you need to following things:

h.bin file from the root of your memory stick
The ChickHEN folder in the PHOTOS folder on your memory stick

      Hope it helps :)

  29. Lil says:

    Hi,
Just a small question: I have psp 2000 and (I don’t know how I did it), I installed CFE 3.60 MHU. I was just wondering what’s the difference between MHU and Gen A and whether I should stick to what I have now or just change to Gen A

    Thanks in advance!

    • admin says:

I cannot really say as I have not ever used 3.60 MHU but if everything you are currently doing works on your device now with 3.60 MHU, why update?

    • admin says:

At the moment, there is no way to hack PSP 3000 on 6.10 and since there is no way to downgrade you are stuck for now. I’m afraid you gonna have to sit tight and wait for a new hack.

Well kinda, you should yes update to 5.03, then run ChickHEN and then run any of the 5.03GEN CFWs. Then I would recommend updating to 5.50GEN-D.

Well as you are using ChickHEN, you must be on 5.03 SO updating to 5.00 is going backwards and is impossible. Instead, install 5.03GEN-C custom firmware.

Yes it can be 4gb. As long as it says Magic Memory Stick or Magic Stick next to it, it will work :) Once you get it, send our helpcenter and email and we will guide you through it step by step: http://blog.alltechrelated.com/need-help/
