It seems that for Sega, it was cheaper for them to make some sort of an emulator rather than post a game because with their recent release of Sonic the Hedgehog in the AppStore, after some snooping within the files there is a fil called rom.bin and if you replace it with any other Sega Genesis roms it works!
It does not work with most games and Sega only allow the use of d-pad and the A button but games do work.
Some games that have been tested and work are:
- Sonic 1
- Sonic 2
- Afterburner 2
- Ecco the Dolphin
- Altred Beasts (thanks to Marco for this tip)
So if you wanna play the a different Sega Genesis game here is how you do it:
- Rename your Sega Genesis Rom to rom.bin – this will only work if the rom was originally a .bin file.
- Navigate to /private/var/mobile/Applications/xxxxx-xxxxxxxx/Sonic 1.app and backup the current rom.bin file.
- Copy over your new rom.bin file and see if it plays.
Here is the AppStore link to the ‘Emulator’: HERE
If you get a game to work, please post a comment so we can keep the compatibility list updated.
Disclaimer: Here at AllTechRelated.com we do not endorse piracy. Do not download rom files because it is illegal. This is only intended for people who have rom files backup-ed from there Sega Genesis games that they bought.

Great tips maybe with firmware 3.0, we'll be able to buy content (roms) separately.
Lucky one if you believe they would do such progressive things for us. Well I am disappointed. It's sad they "just" made an Emulator. Now they make cash cows out of us. The Ultimate Collection for Nextgen consoles has a way better price/performance ratio.
Anyway: Thanks for revealing this info.
ALTRED BEAST WORKS!!!
only fire!
You cant jump
Thanks for the tip. Updating the list right now
In Sonic 2 on my iPhone 3GS, it keeps freezing as soon as you reach a point on Act 1 of the Chemical Plant Zone…
In sonic 2 on the ipod touch it works perfectly until i get to the end of the first stage it just crashes, and always at the end of the first stage. Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be wrong.
BTW im running 3.0
[...] This is not the first emulator to be released onto the AppStore however the other one was done without Apple knowing. Check out the Sega Genesis emulator here. [...]
