Some developers believe they have found the answer to the question of whether or not the new iPhone will contain a magnetometer (compass). They have found some new header files under the name of compass in the new iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5.
The files show that the creator of the magnetometer by Asahi Kasei’s azimuth sensor No. AK8973.
For those who don’t know, a magnetometer is a digital compass. The compass could potentially make turn-by-turn GPS in the new iPhone (if it includeds it) and like on the Android G1, you can just turn your iPhone to change direction in street view.
