How to Jailbreak iPod Touch 2nd Generation – Redsn0w for Windows

Posted by psp2468 February - 1 - 2009 - Sunday

Here is a guide showing you how to jailbreak your iPod Touch 2nd Generation on Windows. The release was originally only for MACS but here is a guide on how to do it in Windows.

FORGET ALL THE BELOW. YOU CAN NOW JAILBREAK YOUR IPOD TOUCH 2ND GENERATION ON FIRMWARE 3.0! FOR MORE INFO GO HERE

THIS IS THE UNTETHERED VERSION OF THE JAILBREAK MEANING YOU HAVE TO HAVE IT PLUGGED INTO THE COMPUTER FO R EACH REBOOT. HOWEVER THERE IS AN UNTETHERD VERSION: FOR MAC OR WINDOWS

EDIT: Shortperson1026 has relesaed an AUTOMATED version of the jailbreak which makes it WAAYY easier to do! Download it Redsn0w 1_0 (10059)

HERE IS ANOTHER VERSION BY PHEONIX THAT IS ABIT EASIER! Make sure you read the readme included and follow the guide written in it STEP BY STEP: Jailbreak.zip (3852)

A GUI VERSION (A ACTUAL PROGRAM) WAS RELEASED!: HERE

A NEW 4 SECOND JAILBREAK HAS BEEN RELEASED! HAD THE MOST SUCCESS ON IPODTOUCHFANS IN MY OPINION: HERE

HERE is the semi-tethered working jailbreak with a HD video tutorial: CLICK ME

What you’ll need:

Redsn0w Lite (8762)
Xpwn (8126)
iRecovery and libusb (5408)
2.1.1 IPSW
2.2.1 IPSW

1.) Extract redsn0w lite and XPwn to your Desktop.

2.) Save (or move) the 2.2.1 IPSW into the XPwn folder.

3.) In the rslite101 folder, there should be a FirmwareBundles folder; copy the iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11.bundle into your XPwn\FirmwareBundles\ folder.

4.) Open up a Command Prompt (type cmd in the Search bar if on Vista).

5.) Type the following:

Code:
cd C:\Users\yourusername\Desktop\XPwn-0.5.7-win32\
ipsw "iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11a_Restore.ipsw" "iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11a_Custom_Restore.ipsw" -s 700 bundles\Cydia.tar

If you’re running XP, your location will be a bit different (should be C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Desktop\).

Also, if you’re running XP (with PowerToys), Vista, or 7, you can easily navigate to folders in a Command Prompt without using cd.
Simply hold shift, then right click on a folder (here, for example, you’d shift and right click on XPwn-0.5.7-win32), then select Open Command Window here.
This can be done with any other part of this tutorial that involves cd.
Thanks, MatthewH12!

6.) Wait for XPwn to finish, it should only take a few minutes.

7.) Extract all files in the iRecovery RAR to your Desktop and open the iRecovery folder, there should be an installer for libusb located here.
If you haven’t already installed libusb, please do so now.
If you’re running Vista or 7, please right click the .exe and select Properties, then click the Compatibility tab, then select Windows XP (Service Pack 2) from the drop-down menu.
After install, a restart may be required.

8.) Open another Command Prompt (or use the one you used before, if it is still up) and type the following:

Code:
cd C:\Users\yourusername\Desktop\iRecovery\iRecovery_SVN

Again, your location will be different if you’re on XP, see above.

9.) Extract your 2.1.1 iBSS and 2.2.1 iBSS and iBoot.
To do so, right click your 2.1.1 IPSW and select Open with > WinRAR archiver.
Navigate to the Firmware\dfu directory, then drag iBSS.n72ap.RELEASE.dfu into your iRecovery_SVN folder.
Rename it iBSS211.dfu.
Now, open up your custom 2.2.1 IPSW using WinRAR.
First, navigate to the Firmware\dfu folder and drag iBSS.n72ap.RELEASE.dfu into your iRecovery_SVN folder.
Rename is iBSS221.dfu.
Now, navigate to the Firmware\all_flash\all_flash.n72ap.production folder.
Extract iBoot.n72ap.RELEASE.img3 to your iRecovery_SVN folder.
Rename it iBoot221.img3.

10.) Put your iPod into DFU mode (this is out of the scope of this tutorial, sorry).
Bring up your Command Prompt again and execute the following:

Code:
iRecovery -f iBSS211.dfu

Your iPod’s screen should turn white.
If it doesn’t, unplug your iPod and wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.

11.) In the same Command Prompt, enter the following:

Code:
iRecovery -s
arm7_stop
mw 0x9000000 0xe59f3014
mw 0x9000004 0xe3a02a02
mw 0x9000008 0xe1c320b0
mw 0x900000c 0xe3e02000
mw 0x9000010 0xe2833c9d
mw 0x9000014 0xe58326c0
mw 0x9000018 0xeafffffe
mw 0x900001c 0x2200f300
arm7_go
arm7_stop
/exit

Just to clarify, you will hit enter after each of these commands.

12.) Restore to your custom firmware using iTunes (hold shift and hit Restore, then select iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11_Custom_Restore.ipsw).
It may hang on “Preparing..” for a long time; just wait it out, it’ll move on eventually.

13.) After your restore is complete, put you iPod into DFU mode, you’ll have to apply the patch again to boot.
You will also have to do these same things each time you boot from now on:

Code:
iRecovery -f iBSS211.dfu

Unplug your iPod, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
Your screen should be white now.
Run the following after:

Code:
iRecovery -s
arm7_stop
mw 0x9000000 0xe59f3014
mw 0x9000004 0xe3a02a02
mw 0x9000008 0xe1c320b0
mw 0x900000c 0xe3e02000
mw 0x9000010 0xe2833c9d
mw 0x9000014 0xe58326c0
mw 0x9000018 0xeafffffe
mw 0x900001c 0x2200f300
arm7_go
arm7_stop
/sendfile iBSS221.dfu
go
/exit

Wait for your iPod to reconnect (it should disappear in iTunes, then reappear in a couple seconds).
Run the following:

Code:
iRecovery -f iBoot221.img3
iRecovery -s
go
/exit

14.) Your iPod should now be booting; enjoy you tethered jailbreak.

Also, don’t forget that if you want to reboot your iPod, each time you’ll have to repeat step 13, and step 13 only.

Edit: Please do not PM me right now, I can’t help you.
It’s my birthday today, so people are at my house for my party (that I didn’t even want).
Also, I don’t have a 2G and cannot really troubleshoot that well.
Please ask in the thread or search.
Sorry.

Also, if you think you’ve bricked your device, you haven’t.
Keep trying to enter either restore or DFU mode, there’s always a way to save your device, just don’t panic.

Finally, by following these instructions, you take responsibility for whatever may happen to your iPod.
It is not that dangerous, but it’s not my fault if something fluky were to happen.

Edit 2: If iRecovery won’t work for you, please install this.

  1. Josh says:

Hey guys, if you have success with this guide, please post about it. It may be more comforting for others to know that this works.

a word of advice.. if you want to install “Winterboard”, it requires you to reboot the device. Just hit the restart button after installing, your ipod will shut off, do step 13 and it will be up and running. If you had trouble with step 13 in the first place and made it “somehow work”, you might think twice before installing Winterboard. Happy jailbreaking!

  2. Eric says:

everything works fine until I have to load the custom ipsw I go to iTunes and it won’t recognize it I looked all over the net for an answer, my custom ipsw is fine and my screen is white, is there a problem with my iTunes?

  8. Shyaam says:

  9. Mike says:

Hey i tried it and works great with the new GUI did it at least 3 times. i messed up on step 5 after the apple restore… was thrown off by the USB device not recognized but realized i need to get into the DFU mode so held my power and home button for like 11 sec and then let go of the power button and heard my DING sound… afterwards continued. when i finished everything … itunes asked to restore my device… stupid me i clicked yes and tada … USB device NOT FOUND … so i had to put it into the DFU mode and start over from step five. re did it works great just dont restore from itunes

  10. Josh says:

Jay_1974, so everything went fine up until step 12?

  11. Josh says:

@Bob, which guide are you on? step 8 on THIS guide doesn’t require the ipod yet. If you are getting an error, download the Microsoft C++ tools at the bottom of the guide

@mytch, you should be fine. If it doesn’t work, you can always update :)

  12. Mytch says:

Hey guys, I did jailbreak my iPod. So there is a way. I do not recomend any of these programa though. I got mine by mixing 4 different programs. 1 was mine. 2 were from this website and one I found somewhere else that I had to rewrite. So unless you can do what I did do not do this. Wait until redsn0w comes out. Your welcome. Wooooh I got a jailbroken iPod touch 2nd generation running 2.2.1 firmware.

  20. Jodyssey says:

    Hi all,
I attempted the GUI jailbreak just now. I got to the step where you install the new jailbreak firmware. It installed after some time. After it was done, the screen was black and nothing happened after that. The ipod now does not start and is an unrecognized USB device. I tried holding the power button and home button for 10-11 sec and then just the home button for 8. Where the ding of the computer telling me a usb device has plugged in is supposed to happen, it just tells me the device isn’t recognized. I still continue to wait the extra 8 seconds on the home button but nothing happens. The ipod does not start. Have I completely destroyed it or is there hope?

  21. raperce says:

hey Jodyssey don’t worry about the Ipod it works but in the restore mode. just turn the sound on and try it several times with pushing the buttons and wait for your PC to not showing the message that the usb is not recognized, and you will hear the sound of pluging the ipod ( but will not show that is ipod )
after that read this http://alltechrelated.co.uk/2009/02/02/gui-jailbreaking-ipod-touch-2nd-gen-application-for-windows-released/ there is a Cywood application.. continue with step 5… and do what is writen there. It works, but I have one problem with restarting or switch off the Ipod, every swtch off or restarting I must plug into my computer and continue with step 5 from the Cywood application

  22. Doodger says:

Thanks man! Altough i’m using mac i’ve been able to use your tutorial and it rocks.

  25. Mike says:

    hey Jodyssey,
i had that same exact thing happen to me like 10 times.
the first few times i installed LibUsb wrong on my vista laptop so the usb ports stopped working so i restarted my computer and the internet and sound stopped workin so wat i did was i uninstalled LibUsb and rite clicked on it and made it combatible with XP service pack 2.
then i started the “USB device is Unknown”
when i got that i just restarted my laptop and it was fixed…

  26. jjkillaz says:

Tyler, you are definatley supposed to do the shift-click restore step. A directory window will open and you have to locate and install the hacked firmware. As the iphone-devs state clearly on their website, only attempt the jailbreak if you know what you are doing. Please don’t flame us if you don’t follow the directions properly. Ask nicely and I will be glad to help you.

Also, if you already synced your ipod with itunes before, then it will give you the option to sync your files back to the device. The jailbreak isn’t easy, it takes some patience.

Halolover, are you trying to download it off of the ipod? You need to use a PC.

    -Josh

  28. iTouch User says:

Hey,I get stuck on step 5.Please help me I really need to do it!!
    Please,please,please!!

    Thank-you

    -iTouch User

  29. jjkillaz says:

Hey iTouch User, what happens when you do step 5? Try to be a little more descriptive so I can help you out. (XP or Vista, what it says in the command prompt, etc.)

  30. Cathrine says:

hi all i need some help BAD!!,

so i jailbroke my ipod today wooohooo!d

but then i restored it manuallyh byy holding downthe pwer button nd home button, it turned off but wont turn on!!! please help!!! is it broken!!

  31. sebasjani says:

    hi
problem im getting this in step 10
    got usb
    got usb
    no iphone/ipod found
    any suggestion

  32. sebasjani says:

I fix it. but still i couldn’t get the white screen.

  33. jjkillaz says:

Cathrine, remember that when it powers off, it becomes useless until you do step 13 on the computer.

  34. jjkillaz says:

Sebajani, on which step does it not give you the white screen? I have seen this problem before. Try restarting the computer and retrying the step. It may not work the first couple times. Be patient, keep trying. I had a guy with the same problem. Try to go through the steps quickly, pay close attention to details, and it should work eventually. This is partly why it isn’t an official jailbreak. I may be starting a jailbreaking service soon and I can jailbreak it and send you the files/instructions to reboot it. If any of you are having problems, I will let you know if and when I can start this.

  35. Cathrine says:

So do i use irecovery for this or what??
Im kinda new to this whole stuff?

  36. jjkillaz says:

    Yes, you always use iRecovery.

I have a new guide up for anybody having problems with the jailbreak.

    http://alltechrelated.co.uk/2009/02/19/troubleshooting-with-ipod-touch-2g-windows-jailbreak-tethered/

  37. nivekmai says:

Hey, just to let everyone know, this worked perfectly for me, first run through and my Ipod Touch was fine.

But I can see the whole tethered boot becoming a nuisance, does anyone know of a way to make it so that you don’t have to repeat step 13 when/if my Ipod crashes?

  38. bdavis says:

wtf, the 1.1.2 and 1.2.2 are like 300 mega bites in size, who the hell has that much time to sit and wait 8 hours for it to download?????

  39. tank says:

everytime i download the 2.2.1 ipsw.. its in a zipped folder… i try to extract everything and it wont extract some files because they have athe same name file.. like the firmware folder and firmware file?..

also.. when i try to do the first part of the command prompt.. it says the specified pathway is not located.? i dont get it.. please help

  40. admin says:

The .ipsw file does not need to be extracted. Leave it as it is and try : )

  41. Needs help says:

All of the programs used to jailbreak are not detecting my itouch.

    iTouch 2g FW 2.2.1

  42. psp2468 says:

Ya it is for the 2nd Generation iPod Touch on firmware 2.2.1.

  43. Rachel says:

    where is the computer prompt??

  44. Richard says:

Thanks for this good post. But I have a question after Step 13, my ipod touch just shows USB and ITunes icons and iTunes shows the message "ITunes has detected and iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes". Please let me know what I need to do next. Any help will be appreciated.

  45. Kelsey says:

When i put the code in the command prompt at step 5 it says that it's not an recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file? is the code right and my computer isn't recognizing it?

  46. Kelsey says:

When i get to step 10 the cmd prompt comes back saying USB Found but it can't find the iPod or iPhone. I did the un-plug and plug back in but it didn't do anything. it's in DFU mode.

  47. hosed? says:

Completed everything up to Step 12 just fine. But now my Touch 2G won't start at all. Tried to reset by holding down power+home but absolutely nothing happens — I cannot Reset, and I know how to do that.
